For music ? I'm trying Soulseek and its not bad for the rare or old stuff I like .

I don't think eMule sucks, if you configure it right and forwards the right ports it works like a charm! :)

Whoever thinks any file sharing program is irredeemably useless doesn't know how to integrate their software. Other than Kazaa (which, I'm sorry, is in fact a piece of shit), every program I can think of has an indispensable use. My usage pattern breaks down like this:
Bittorrent: Software, movies, music.
Emule: Extremely rare movies and music.
DC: Singles, speed.
Soulseek: Rare singles.
Posted by: Rip The Jacker
eMule is just plain awful.
Posted by: erunestian
Like orfik said it's very good for rare stuff... All the music albums I can't find on Waffles, What.cd, Pedro's I search them on eMule and many times I do find them...
Posted by: jr56
I find emule indispensible for old stuff, i use bittorrent mainly for new stuff
Posted by: tiolewis
You can get anything with Emule , but the speed isnt good at all

newsgroup is the way :yup:

emule is for old/rare staff but bt is faster
btw i indeed dont know how to integrate my software

tiolewis - You can get anything with Emule , but the speed isnt good at all
Interesting. Perhaps you did not use eMule much, then? I get my fastest DL speeds with eMule and not with uTorrent, tough :) But many of the older torrents run at like 0,1 - 0,5kBy, so... Let's talk about speed, lol
Posted by: the_saint
theres two ways of looking at this, both systems have their pros and cons. both are free though, and so dont match to newsgroups.
the point is you should have both to complement each other. just saying that something sucks is an awful way to put it

Who thinks eMule sucks does not know how to use it or never used it. I use eMule since 2002, and all i can say is i still love it, i can find everything there, since obscure movies till rare music, and of course old, very old scene Releases.
If i had to choose between eMule and BT i would choose eMule for sure, even known that speeds are not great, im a pacient man tho.
Long live eMule

Well emule is NOT what it used to be before they raided the Big Bang and number 1 through 6 servers!
Those were the largest servers on emule and had the most "rare" stuff.
You can still find "rare" stuff on emule, but not NEARLY as easily as you could using Big Bang or number 1 through six servers.
And I highly doubt that there is as much files now on it as there used to be before the raids took place.

Emule is good for old stuff, but torrents for fresh. :)

BitTorrent is stupid, nothing's available, everything run out of seed and is deleted, no choice, no quality.
eMule is so much faster!
I'm sorry but you are very misinformed about BitTorrent. Almost everything is available on BitTorrent and on the good sites you'll almost every time find a seed or if not somebody will come to reseed. It's a lot of choice and when it comes to quality, quality is a lot better than on eMule. On private sites you find only lossless music with all the tags in the right place so it is with DVDs, HD-DVDs, Blu-Ray discs... For me, in the quality section BT is a winner.

I'll just put it this way I never used eMule and I never will. As ED2K being very slow network thanks to majority of eMule clients with large queue system. That is practically way to much time consuming and waste of time for someone like me who is a super seeder. Anything I download I get it from UseNET or BlackNET time to time from torrent.
I run my own FServ and share over iRN and when bandwidth is not used I upload in ED2K. aMule/eMule both sucks compared to GT based networks.
Posted by: burtz
ed2k network isn't for everyone. it's protocol design is unique that it makes downloading slower (at least for the first days of usage) but it does ensure that everyone completes the file. it's just like seeding a torrent to a 1:1 ratio. i always use it when something like a movie, record or even applications comes to my mind and i can't find it within trackers. so for me, it doesn't suck. :)

Who told you that? Do you even know anything about ED2K? Only reason it is slow now because of piece of shit emule client as it is used by majority of users with very large queue system. After that many other things also effects it. For example the number of source and the total allocation bandwidth per slots also user modifier and credit system.
Now don't get me wrong I don't download from ED2K its way to slow, I download only from iRN or Use/BlackNET and share over iRN/ED2K.

eMule
Lets say I want to share a semi large file, 144MB and I have a 30K connection and 16 people are wanting the file. eMule will break this file into 16 parts of 9MBs each. Now, instead of uploading the entire file to one person at a fast speed, I upload to about 8 users at a slower speed. Each of these people should be downloading a different part of the file. Once these initial uploads recieve 9MB, I send them back to the queue and start uploading to the other 8 users. Since those first 8 users recieve 9MB (or a complete chunk), they now start uploading that chunk to everyone else wanting the file. When the second set of 8 users finish downloading 9MB, they are put back on the queue. Now, if everyone downloaded a different 9MB chunk from me, I have just uploaded 16 chunks (The whole file) into the network and could even unshare the file since I also now have 16 users helping me share it. Now, this means that everyone gets the files slower, but they ALL get the file even if I leave the network.. So, lets say after uploading 300MB of the file, I disconnect. Then after I disconnect, more people want to download that file. Although there isn't anyone in the network with the full file yet, they can still get it because they find the 16 other sources of that file still on the network. Then they themselves quickly become sources for others that want it.
Other networks
Again, I want to share a semi large file, 144MB and I have a 30K connection and 16 people are wanting the file. I start uploading that file to one of the people wanting the file. This persons downloads at pretty fast speed.. But, when he finishes the download, he disconnects so he can use it. I upload to the next person real fast and he completes it. He stays on a bit and begins to share it to one other users. I also begin to upload to the next user.. But I disconnect at 300MB.. This leaves only one person able to share that file in the network and this person doesn't stay on long either since he has the complete file. Now, only two people got the whole file, and 2 others only have part of the file. The file is now dead to the network and nobody else can get it.-by Unknown1, admin of the official emule project board.
Posted by: HyperNode
First of all I have read that before ages ago, Second of all learn to read this forum before you google emule board posts. Its clear you didn't understand what I was saying but ironically you agreed with me by posting that. Matter of fact if you go in emule forum now you can see me talk about the chunk size unless they removed it.
Posted by: burtz
i've read that when i started to use emule, not just googled it a while ago.

i've read that when i started to use emule, not just googled it a while ago.
Well I am not saying emule is bad believe it or not emule is very effective when it comes to spreading chunks for 2g file swarming network compared to 3g file swarming networks like torrent. eMule is just one of many clients that uses ED2K and happens to me the major client now with majority of the users over 4+ million users.
Only thing I dislike about eMule is that it is the ONLY client on ED2K with HUGE queue implementation, that is not effective when spreading small files. This is why I share in ED2K and don't download from it.

eMule is perfect to find rare and old stuff, but it takes around a week to download something because it barely connects to any peers, and people cap their upload speed... Good luck if you download at more than 25k/s for more than an hour! And thats if you stay connected to a peer for longer than an hour!
Posted by: erunestian
I found out that if you don't cap your upload speed, you get connected faster and get better download speeds... It may be some kind of policy?

Its a feature to prevent leechers on the network.

they're probably on chinese trackers but if you're not fluent with the language it can be really hard to navigate. emule provides a convenient onestop station that has almost everything, yet is english based, even though you might have to search using chinese, but that's pretty easy to copy/paste.

Emule is awesome. yes, it cant compete with the speeds, but it has everything bittorrent sites have, plus more. And theres sites that have verified ed2k links that links you with the files on the network, kind of like torrent site do. sharethefiles.com is one of the best ones.

I don't have that experience with eMule. All the albums I couldn't find on torrent sites I could on eMule. And only one time a download didn't have enough sources to complete it. For all the rare stuff I use emule.

Emule is so slow thesedays. Like 5KB/S
Posted by: kyuuchi
Emule is only good for really old hard to find files & asian stuff. In fact, I've managed to grab some old tv shows not available on neither BT/rapidshare. Emule does not suck, it's just past its time of glory. Back in kazaa days, Edonkey was way superior to kazaa in every way and now everyone had moved on to BT. But in few years, it'll probably be something new, and the same people will say BT sucks..
Posted by: Freeze
It is time to move on to new, better things.
Posted by: MoReBeEr(VB)
Nah, I think I'll still keep using Emule.
Used to use the original Morpheus then KazaaLite then Overnet,
my current version is Emule Xtreme 6.1, works fine for me.
By using verified hashes via FTI, ShareTheFiles, PornLinkPro & the internal "search" I can find EVERYTHING new, old & RARE that I want.
Since I live in Aussie can only afford 512Broadband 20GB per month.
With my slooow Emule I can download 1.5Gb per 24hrs so my 20GB only lasts about 10 days.
I guess I could use a "Torrent" program & use my limit in 7 days though.
Emule is slow on NEW very popular movies & games as you start at the bottom of a very looong queue, but over time it speeds up.
With "normal" files 30-40KB/S is normal for most.

if files are rare you can't give then yeah it might also be slow but at least it's available at all
Posted by: Disme
eMule is indeed slower than BT, but on the other hand if using it properly, you cann still get decent speeds. Just depends on the amount of sources you have.
The servers nowadays suck and KAD is the way to go.
eMule still rocks when it comes to finding rare stuff.
Posted by: saddam07
emule is fast and you can use limit of connection but speed is not in one files.you must add a lot of files for maximum speed...
emule is like paradise, you can find everthing old or new there.
emule and bittorrent match their weak sides but for me bittorent is best
Posted by: MarXian
I always add 20 files or more, sometimes I add 50 files and the speed significantly increases coming to my maximum capacity (5 MB). I can not complain about the speed of eMule. I think that most who complain about eMule just put one file to download with low id (big mistake), eMule is not Bittorrent (fortunately)
If I want to download 50 files with bittorrent I must to download 2 or 3 files in once a time and with eMule I can download those 50 files simultaneously with lees speed each file, but in the global, I get those 50 files more faster with eMule, so eMule is better.

For me Bittorent is the best way to download anything if you want some what is not on trackers then use DC++ and even if that what is looking for cant find there then i use eMule where you can find a lot of rare things ... :)

I love eMule, I love it to bits. (whoops, unintended pun )
Once you know how to use it properly, and understand how it works, it's actually quite fast in the end. It's more of a "background" thing than torrents.
But where's the first place I search when I need something? eMule. It's a completely different way of file-sharing to torrent, I use both as much as each other. But eMule is indispensable, still the place with the most content. And that alone makes me want to share unique stuff on there, and I do. I find that VERY satisfying.

I've almost abandoned emule since discovering private torrrent trackers. But still it is the last chance for rare stuff.
Somehow I feel BT is a way more safe thing.
Posted by: amdrules
its possible to find so many things on emule, as compared to bit torrent, yeah you have to be patient with speeds but in the end its worth it.

eMule is great for finding ultra rare, small-weight stuff, such as MP3 singles that you can't find anywhere. Aside from that, it's pretty bad.

well u cant compare emule with utorrent, since many differents are there..
maybe if u compare emule with edonkey or something like that then ok,but with utorrent or anyother client:ermm:

Correct, BitTorrent is a file distribution system using peer-to-peer.
eMule/eD2k is a global, decentralized P2P mesh w/ search etc.
You can get pretty good speeds, but only if you let it work for many hours, ideally 24/7, and many files at once is also a good idea.
Posted by: Simulador
Well i used to use it...it gave me a lot when i first started with file sharing...so i wont say anything against eMule...when you learn how to use it is not that bad
When you learned how to use BitTorrent, and if you have a lot of the good trackers well....
Posted by: EyezSS
^^ Very good point. Anyone with good private torrent sites like tl, revtt, bitme, what/waffles etc wouldn't bother using emule/kazaa/bearshare.
Posted by: VillageShaman
eMule has lost what it was a long time ago IMO. It used to have more rare material. Nowadays, with the advent of the closing of most ed2k mirror sites, like ShareReactor, then Pleasuredome101, things have pretty much got lost. ShareTheFiles and a few other sites seem to still exist? (correct me if I'm wrong)
But most of what I found interesting in ed2k is no more. It takes time, is flooded with fakes, and not always you can complete a dl. IMO now its only good for an album or two if you're lucky.
Posted by: Falksteren
Totally agree with VillageShaman :(

eMule isn't so slow. There is people with few neurons who just know torrents or limewire and nothing about eMule, but those same people use eMule when they don't find anything in your f * ing torrent and then they say "eMule is a crap". eMule works with many downloads and not with one or two files like torrent. With eMule I have all files and good speed, so bittorrent and privates trackers can kiss my hairy ass.

Emule is great..no ratio to worry about, only your own concience. Amazingly wide selection in everything you can imagine, and the longetivity of the files are incredible. There are divx-rips made 6 years ago that are still out there.
Download speeds are of course much lower than bt, but if you download 12 movies at the same time for a month, you'l never be able to catch up the viewing after a while. I stopped using emule a few months back, and still I have about 700 divx-movies I've yet to watch..
Only reason I stopped using it is that I now mainly go for dvd-r's, and for that emule is too slow for me.

Good point. Emule has many hard-to-find files. Its tragic just how deeply corrupted it has become. Reminds me of what happened to Kazaa back in the days... I think its just a testament to the relatively short lifespan for any unmonitored, open filesharing protocol like that.
