I'm backing up all the people who said Linkin Park. Same with Limp Bizkit. How they both got on Sanitarium, I'll never figure out. Metallica used to be cool, but their new album isn't worth the shit I could wipe on it.

one more vote here for Radiohead and Oasis as the most overrated bands. i want to say The White Stripes as well, but being a mediocre Led Zep tribute band still isn't nearly as bad or pretentious as Radiohead and Oasis.

O well deftones rocked and so did taproot.. after watching the taproot singer jump from the seating area balcony into the pit, i decided that there was no need to try and run past the bouncers on the downstairs doors anymore...
Anyway back to overrated bands.. Nickelback.. they should burn, Limp Bizkit.. how the hell can anyone call them good.. ok 3 dollar bill y'all was ok.. but after that they just took the piss, i mean "keep rollin rollin rollin rollin rollin" whilst doing a shitty little pop band dance routine..wtf is that about... they can go on the fire with nickelback!!

I'm a Beatles lover since I was a child but I must tell that I have also ever loved bands like the Rolling Stones, Who, Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Hendrix, ...
In my humble opinion 99% of the bands known in the last, say, 20/22 years, should pay a FAIR fee for the good influence that the bands I mentioned gave them.
Many bands mentioned in this thread did very good songs and often very good albums, but they can't compete with the importance of many amazing Bands that were almost ever EXCELLENT in the past .
Bands like Radiohead, Metallica, Linkin Park, Oasis and a ton of others will be remembered for some songs and albums, but it is unlikely that they will influence other bands in the same matter they were influenced by the greatest old ones.
In example and speaking for myself, I can quite live without listening to Radioheads' OK Computer for years, but now and then I MUST give The Bends a go since I consider it a real masterpiece...and the same thing happens often with many other Bands.
It is indeed VERY difficult to always produce GOOD MUSIC and ONLY the BEST can achieve that task regularly...and usually the best are a few... :rolleyes:

The only reason these kinda bands are allowed to make music is so that they make the record company plenty of cash. I'm not familiar with Bunch of Arse but I don't think Green Day are over-rated.
There aren't that many bands who can pull off several different styles fairly successfully and get a political message across into the bargain.
I'd say that Coldplay, Bush and Craig David (altho' he isn't a band) are completely over-rated. It's because they have enjoyed a modicum of success in the US so they get some kind of status boost from this.
A quick glance at the US charts tells me that their collective taste is not to be used as some kind of quality barometer.

In today's musical world many bands have become famous despite having no musical skill or taste. They are in a word, overrated. It is time to give these musical cancers the recognition they deserve. It is time to rank the top ten most overrated bands of all time. The following list was compiled through deep investigative reporting and a poll of top music insiders. Ranked by a standardized point scale, these ten bands were chosen by the amount they were "overrated" in four areas: overrated albums or singles, overrated concerts, overrated hysteria, and plain out overrated musical skill.
It has been also been determined that approximately 95.5% of the fan base of these overrated bands possess one or more of the following: 1)an IQ under 50. 2)addiction to alcohol or drug-related substances. 3)A subscription to Oprah's Magazine 4)an emotional need to feel accepted and 5)no life.
Without further ado, lets begin the list of the top ten most overrated bands of all time:
10)Limp Bizkit. I wish that this band would keep "rollin'" into some deep, inescapable abyss. Hearing their music makes all of body limp. If I had it "My Way," I would take Fred Durst's red hat turn it sideways and stick it straight up his chocolate starfish ass.
9)Hootie and the Blowfish. Need I say more?
8)Pink Floyd. Perhaps the only legitimate band in the list, their reason for being placed here is strictly because of the "overrated" quality of the list. Pink Floyd is a good band, but not a great band. Devoting thirty minutes on a classic rock radio station to their music not only shrinks the intelligence of the listening audience but also misleads them into believing that Pink Floyd actually has three good songs. Maybe some education would have helped their song writing.
7)Nirvana. "Smells like something crappy." I would like to take their "heart-shaped box" and flush it down my "oval-shaped hole" in my restroom. Lucky for Nirvana, their "lead singer," and I use that term loosely, died; otherwise, they would have produced a decade of pathetic music like number one on this list. To further promote my point, Nirvana's drummer is the lead singer of Foo Fighters. Ouch, that one hurt to say.

In today's musical world many bands have become famous despite having no musical skill or taste. They are in a word, overrated. It is time to give these musical cancers the recognition they deserve. It is time to rank the top ten most overrated bands of all time. The following list was compiled through deep investigative reporting and a poll of top music insiders. Ranked by a standardized point scale, these ten bands were chosen by the amount they were "overrated" in four areas: overrated albums or singles, overrated concerts, overrated hysteria, and plain out overrated musical skill.
It has been also been determined that approximately 95.5% of the fan base of these overrated bands possess one or more of the following: 1)an IQ under 50. 2)addiction to alcohol or drug-related substances. 3)A subscription to Oprah's Magazine 4)an emotional need to feel accepted and 5)no life.
Without further ado, lets begin the list of the top ten most overrated bands of all time:
10)Limp Bizkit. I wish that this band would keep "rollin'" into some deep, inescapable abyss. Hearing their music makes all of body limp. If I had it "My Way," I would take Fred Durst's red hat turn it sideways and stick it straight up his chocolate starfish ass.
9)Hootie and the Blowfish. Need I say more?
8)Pink Floyd. Perhaps the only legitimate band in the list, their reason for being placed here is strictly because of the "overrated" quality of the list. Pink Floyd is a good band, but not a great band. Devoting thirty minutes on a classic rock radio station to their music not only shrinks the intelligence of the listening audience but also misleads them into believing that Pink Floyd actually has three good songs. Maybe some education would have helped their song writing.
7)Nirvana. "Smells like something crappy." I would like to take their "heart-shaped box" and flush it down my "oval-shaped hole" in my restroom. Lucky for Nirvana, their "lead singer," and I use that term loosely, died; otherwise, they would have produced a decade of pathetic music like number one on this list. To further promote my point, Nirvana's drummer is the lead singer of Foo Fighters. Ouch, that one hurt to say.

There aren't that many bands who can pull off several different styles fairly successfully and get a political message across into the bargain.
I'd say that Coldplay, Bush and Craig David (altho' he isn't a band) are completely over-rated. It's because they have enjoyed a modicum of success in the US so they get some kind of status boost from this.
A quick glance at the US charts tells me that their collective taste is not to be used as some kind of quality barometer.

"this band writes, produces and performs all of its own songs." so what, if the songs aren't any good? it's just a different method of producing music, in contrast to a manufactured pop act. britney spears for example may not write & produce her songs, so she apparently lacks talent in that respect. but whoever DOES write & produce britney's stuff is definitely quite talented -- her albums contain some of the best mainstream pop ever recorded imho, regardless of whether or not britney is a talented person.
i don't have any less respect for britney's songwriters & producers than i'd have for, say, burt bacharach or brian wilson (beach boys) or timbaland. or mozart, for that matter. they're all talented composers & band-leaders who used other people to perform their music.

I heartly disagree. I think music is coming more alive than ever right now, with all that technological innovation brings to it. And even in a classic sense, there are some sweet bands with original sounds like Secret Machines and The Arcade Fire that are turning out brilliant albums.

I think nirvana is one of the worst bands ever. i get a lot of shit for saying that-from my friends(not musicians and not exactly cultured) but honestly as a musician i can say they are/were horrible, it actually pains me slightly to listen to that whiny ass-clown.

Any metallica after 'justice', black album (and all others that followed) = overrated, and don't give me crap about how the black album was good. it was not. it was nothign compared to their previous works and is over-sensanatlized by people. I cringe nowadays because people assosciate Metallica with "enter sandman" and "nothing else matters", when I mention songs like "battery", "fade to black" or even "seek and destroy" they raise their eyebrows in a vain attempt to understand the situation, just ridiculous.

Another one is radiohead. Same thing. They had 2 good songs (creep, iron lung).
The new stuff is CRAP and the radio stations still play it. I don't know anyone who likes their new stuff.

OMG yes! People actually agree with me! Linkin Park is so wildly overrated it's mind-numbing. Their music is decent, but its just as decent or even worse than other rock music that's out there. I remember thinking that I used to like "In the End" but then it got overplayed so much I wanted to take a hammer to any radio I heard playing it.
The other group that sucks beyond compare but was crazy popular is Blink 182. Their music was simple a kid could write it, and what's worse...they couldn't even sing!! Did you ever hear them live? *covers his ears*
