How can there be any justification for this utter nonsense!

A British schoolteacher has been arrested in Sudan accused of insulting Islam's Prophet, after she allowed her pupils to name a teddy bear Muhammad.

Well, my feelings are pretty apparent. There can't be. It's zealotry gone mad, but I'd like to see some of our Islamic members try and justify their religion with respect to this new story.

Also... a punishment of 40 lashes could be meted out

A bit barbaric, innit

yes, terrible. But they can run their country however they want.

Posted by: dave12

too bad thats not good she accepted that "she made an "innocent mistake" by letting the six and seven-year-olds choose the name." she should not get any lashes.

The children voted for the name, surely the children should be the ones punished?

While I can't see any justification in this, I have absolutely no sympathy for her predicament.

The Foreign Office has been saying for ages that it isn't a safe place to go to, but wankers like this woman think they know better.

Now she'll be expecting the Foreign Office to put pressure on the Sudanese Government, who will no doubt want some concessions in the discussions about Darfur.

That in turn is likely to cost lives, so I as far as I'm concerned they should let her rot, and even encourage double punishment for being such a stupid twat.

I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't really what this is all about

the sudan government is crazy to do such terrible and unjustified act against a teacher who did nothing wrong
this punishment is against islamic laws itself those people are fanatics and insane:angry:

Posted by: zoe68

I agree with Lynx, who in their right mind would go there?

Posted by: Barbarossa

Well, they've charged her. :dabs:

She's due to appear before a "court" today I think.

Come on. She is an educated woman who knows how serious they take their religion. She knew she was taking a risk in allowing the kids to give the bear that name. I'm not saying the punishment is justified in any way. But if I were teaching at a Catholic school and named the class snake after the Pope, well I would definately expect some backlash.

Benedict the Snake

sounds ok to me

So she got 15 days in jail of which 5 is already served and they don't think she will have to serve the full 15 days.

In other words she will be booted out the moment the visas are ready. Seems completely mad but I suppose the Judge had to balance loony local fundamentalist opinion with not making the country as a whole look stupid and so opted for a safe course.

A bit late for that, I suspect.

She got the worst possible sentence. She was ordered to Return to the U.K. I wonder if she will appeal?

Not just anywhere in the UK, but Liverpool!

Posted by: psxcite

Is the UK really that bad? I've always wanted to visit.

Especially Liverpool...

She made a silly mistake and the law was silly too. But does that balance out :01:

About a year ago I read in the news about a islamic woman who got raped by I think it was like 10 men or something. And she got sentenced to 700 lashes for being in the same room as 10 unknown men. But that was in Saudiarabia (they have the Quran as lawbook I think). I donīt mean to offend anyone but islamic laws are just wrong.

Is this the story you are thinking of?

Maybe, but we are not entitled to reform other countries (or cultures...) value system or law system. ;)

We are not entitled to interfere with the domestic affairs of other countries. Are we, however, allowed to stand by and see thousands of people being killed by dictators?

I personally do not have an answer to that considering we have stood by and allowed Pol Pot, Amin, Stalin, Mugabe and a few others to kill thousands, in some cases millions.

Posted by: Rat Faced

There is no simple answer, but you can't interfere when you want and ignore others that are worse and fixed easier.

How many people wouldnt have starved to death if the money spend in Iraq had gone to African charities?

Less than you think.

Would you like to talk about the United Nations at all. :whistling

What would be your priority, AIDS all over central/eastern/western/southern Africa, or the Sudanese genocide?

Hmmm? :whistling

Well, I do not want to pull this off topic too much; there are 6 Billion people on this Earth and there are going to be 9 billion by the '50s, I believe. Therefore, I don't think it really matters that much to other countries that people are dying. It only comes down to monetary and political reasons for getting involved--so don't kid yourself.

Edit: And scientists say that the Earth can only support about 1 to 2 Billion properly.

Surely an explanation of why the post is wrong would be a more intelligent response. As far as I am aware this case did occur although the details (number of men, lashes etc., are exaggerated in that particular post). Nevertheless a raped woman is going to be lashed for breaking some law about being out without a male family member.

Deleting the truth is never a good option.

My point exactly :D
