Rap or Rock?

Which do you prefer over the other?

Rock, IMO.

Posted by: Actatoi

I enjoy rap more then rock.

:pimp:

I like black rythmes, Gangsta RAP yeeeah... Definitely RAP :)

Rap, easily.

Rap.

Posted by: ziggyjuarez

both but rap a little more

Posted by: tiolewis

Rock, by far!

Posted by: Skizo

Rock, no question.

I'll listen to just about anything but rap. I do like some of the old stuff tho - Slick Rick, PE, Tribe, 8-Ball and MJG, Geto Boys, Run-DMC, NWA and the like. I'm even known to have some Outkast or 2Pac (from when he was alive; not the 30 albums that have since been released) and Jay-Z (but only the Reasonable Doubt album)

Otherwise, southern rap styles are OK as I have a couple of friends who listen to it and I hear a bit that way.

However, all the newer stuff all sounds the same to me. Shit.

Posted by: kirktrix

Both... but i listen more on rock....

Posted by: Skizo

Not 2 minutes after making that post up there, I get a phone call asking if I want to go to a free show at the Parish tomorrow night to see Slick Rick.

Does the Pope wear a funny hat? :smilie4:

rap but sometimes rock too

Rock and rap are very broad categories.
Not all rock is like that, actually, very little is like that.

I voted for rock.
Particularly because of indie rock, and classic rock.
And I don't want to hear about shaking like a saltshaker, dropping it down low, jocking, and supersoaking that hoe all the time. Only sometimes. :D
With that being said, I'll listen to rap that actually has decent lyrics any time. <3Tupac

I remember there was some guy on here that posted a clip of a song he made.

The music was ok but the responses he got were that music was kinda crap but vampire voice was the shit.

All he did was scream raspilly loike.

Rap is flooded with too much commercial bullshit these days, ie 50 cent, G-Unit, Souljah Boy or whatever. Get yourself some CunninLynguists, Jedi Mind Tricks, Immortal Technique, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Public Enemy, Outkast, Saigon, Wu-Tang Clan and I'm sure you will have a different perception of rap rather than just speaking of drugs, guns, hoes, bitches and what not.

Posted by: grimms

Rap. I only listen to rock to find hard guitar samples. But i prefer 90's Hip-Hop vs this commerical wack Hip-Hop where feed now of days.

Stoupe from (Jedi Mind Tricks) is a good dude. I talk to him online here and there. For any of you myspacers out there I go under the name Zahn. I agree there was so much good Hip-Hop back in the 90's. My favorite Wu-Tang, Immortal Technique, Canibus, Mobb Deep, Nas, Tupac, Biggie, Etc.

Much different form of rock if you want to call it that, but IMO some screamo is not bad as long as it is not overused.

Depends on the song really, although I probably lean towards rock

rap = crap :whistling

refering to an old topic in here

Why compaire 2 such different styles?

For me it's no choice, only Rock has to do with music. Rap is just people talking dirty very fast. They often try to hide that by using babes with angelvoices and samples of old hits. But they ain't fooling me. Everyone can rap, it's nothing special. ;)

Just curious.

Is Rap older than Rock? Is Rap just a new name for an old form of 'music' that preceded Rock?:)

Talking Blues is a song form that can trace its surface roots to a recording by the Greenville Trio in April of 1926. Its lineage goes much deeper — to spirituals — and an odd combination of the religious and the profane. The talking blues have served as a vehicle for social commentary for Woodie Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and hundreds of others. I guess you mean more special than ©rap?

I'm actually an old school rocker, Deep Purple/Mothers Finest/Iron Maiden/ACDC kinda rock.
But even nowadays there are still good bands, Dave Matthews/ Porcupine tree/Pearl Jam.

What makes Rock special?
Well good rock is really timeless music. It doesn't age. If i listen to Yes or AC DC it could have been a brand new band. It is like hearing Mozart! I doubt that 20 years from now someone will play snoop dogg/ Notorius B/eminem or whoever because it is so good, so timeless :whistling

Posted by: TP635

Classic Rock is my listening choice. I don't mind the older Rap but the new one have too many f**k words and sound cheap;ie 50 cents:D

Depends on where you look for the rap, mainstream/commercial rap sure sounds like that most of the time. However it is not hard to find people that rap about other things, I have found quite a lot of it. Not that I like all of it. Just that it is there.

New rap is very infant and it is avoiding revolt... And revolt is essence of rap.

Rappers aren't "supposed" to be rich and "famous"...

They are rich but they didn't started rich OR FOR GAINING PROFIT. ;)

Artists I mentioned started to show and express the revolt and fury because of modern society discriminate black people...

That is also making BIG difference in lyrics. Read some of Wu-Tang (or Wu-Tang member/s...) lyrics and you'll understand what I sad... ;)

If you aren't ironic, I am glad. :)

Although, I think it is very interesting that a lot of people I spoke with hate rap. So, there is sometimes that stereotypical situation: rock lovers hate rap (and rappers) and mirror.

Rap is my cup of tea, while rock is not. Actually, there are some guitar bands I adore.

But @ "the end" I am more into Rap than Rock. :)

No I wasn't ironic :)

my first rap record was whodini.

my last one was dj jazzy jeff, ohmega watts or the new wu-tang clan (can't remember)

props to the c4 scene release crew!

Being a hip-hop producer myself and a huge wu fan. That last 8 diagram joint wasn't really that good. I was hughly disappointed. "Rushing Elephants" and "My Heart Gently Weeps" (Beatles sample) were the only two real goods records. Oh and "Weak Spot".

Yea Whodini use to be the shit. I loved that "Friends" record early 80's hip-hop. That last dj jazzy jeff album (2006) surprised me, it was actually really good, just didn't get enough promotion unfortunately. Use to be a huge Fresh Prince fan.

Rap of course :P

Posted by: lostdemon

I go for rap as well. Texas rap and Southern California rap

Posted by: thearrow

Rock, for sure.

It just is so much more complex, the addition of an actual melody to meaningful lyrics instead of an extremely repetitive beat, with a monotone voice talking about his "ho's in da ghettos".....

I found the comment about "my music has to have soul" ironic coming from someone who loves rap. The only soul I see in rap is degenerate skinny white boys rolling around in their civics blaring the same damn shit beat.

I can respect some hip-hop artists for their work, but the majority of "rap" I consider primitive and 'gangsta-wannabe'-ish. The people that listen to that try to project a persona that they simply do not possess. Sometimes I find it slightly amusing.

Posted by: BurntBlue

Sometimes the beats, with nice sampling and stuff attracts people as well.
Atleast it is like that for me and a few friends. Some tracks you just listen to beacuse the beat is perfect and phat :yup:

Same here. I listened to mostly hip-hop until the last few years. Hip-hop has gotten worst and worst since 2003. Lil Jon, 50, Timbaland have made a joke out of hip-hop. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Mainsteam rap has changed but if you listen to underground real street music or unknown gangster rappers then theres no change I think its better actually. Sucks that people judge rap by what they hear on the radio when radio doesn't do it justice.

The realest and rawest shit came from the 90s, the hip-hop game is now corrupted by people like 50 cent. But on the other hand there have still been many good albums and tracks that have been released regardless.:)

Yup there has been so good albums. Diplomatic Immunity one, Visions Of Gandhi, Revolutionary Volume I & II, Illustrious, Bodega Chronicles, Freeways new album, American Gangster, Legacy Of Blood, Who Am I, MM Food, Madvillany, I can go on. Still not as good as the 90's though.

Befor 50 got shot in 2001 he had an ill underground album called Power Of The Dollar. 50 was that good around 1999-2000. After he got shot in the mouth he hasn't been that good since (Get Rich And Die Trying)

Mainly rap, some rock tho

Posted by: BOOM

Rap..ever!

Posted by: MaaxHimself

Definitely both.
Both rock and rap are great, as long as you find the find style for your tastes.
I prefer southern rap, like old Lil' flip stuff (The Leprechaun, You Gotta Feel Me) + his newest big-time release album I Need Mine $$ has lots of different rap styles in its numorous tracks, and Lil' Wayne, Z-RO (free zro), and chamillionaire. Of course the old stuff is great (2pac, NMW, Biggie)
I prefer a wider age-range of rock, however. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are great, as well as Dave Matthews. (Crash is a great album imo)

Posted by: natedogg

I can't choose, I love them both

Posted by: ca_aok

Rock, definitely. Rap, for me, is not musical. I'm not saying it's not artistic in its own way, but I enjoy music where they play real instruments and actually have a vocal melody. Additionally, I find most of the music I listen to needs some sort of guitar (rock/metal/punk/prog etc), which rap also lacks.
