Copyright Laws....

I'm wondering what a copyright actually is.
Now I know I'm allowed to make a backup copy from a CD I already own.
But I also have a lot of old LP's in my collection.
Would I be breaking copyright laws, if I would download and burn songs of those records?
I mean, I already own the original song. All I'm doing is getting a digital backup.
Same goes for VHS/DVD movies. I have a few. Suppose I would download them (for whatever reason), would I be breaking any law? I paid for the original, didn't I?
Just wondering, I'm not about to change my way of life here. :)

I've heard it said that the RIAA claimed at some point that upgrading from LP/etc to mp3s was illegal, but I don't know if that's true or not.

All of that is agaist the current ghestpo Law. We need to rise up and challenge it now. We should re-write it to say once we buy it, it is ours....And we can do with it what we want period!!!

In the UK you are not allowed to make a copy of something you already own. Even if it is for personal use / backup.
