I believe when K-dat previews a file there is an option to create a temporary file. That may do what you want

download AVI Previewc (http://www.biryani.demon.co.uk/software/AviPreviewCv0.85Beta.zip) (ddl). it's a great command driven program to create a new avi file from a partial download.
the avi created by the program will be playable in pretty much any player you have (even wmp)
it's a great little program, there needs to be a pinned topic on it

Of course, this really will only work if the part downloaded is the part you want. Things are downloaded in fragments.
