Registry Cleaners, Spy/ad-ware Removers
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)Posted by: secfan
I've found a few registry cleaners on the net. Personally I think that RegCleaner is the best one (pretty professional compared to others). Found here: http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml
and also RegClean (doesn't seem as good): http://download.com.com/3000-2094-881470.html
As for Spy/Ad-ware Removers, the best ones are still probably Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
and Spybot Search&Destroy (probably the better one): http://security.kolla.de/
Posted by: enkabe
I also like to use Stystem Mechanic (http://www.iolo.com/sm/index.htm) together with ad-aware and RegCleaner. System mechanic has a bunch of tools like finding Junk, obsolete, duplicate files, broken shortcuts
and more usefull stuff like customizing your windows settings.
I will try spybot, haven't tried that proggie before.

The best regclean program is ofcourse JV16 Powertools
http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/index.shtml
System mechanic can make a whirpool with you computer so be carrefull

Got it. Looks promising. Thanks.
Posted by: enkabe
so how does system mechanic "whirpool" your puter up? Since it is not reangering anything. Just curious. I have been using it for ages.
I'll try jv16 powertools, heard good things about it, and it is free ware.

Already have & use jv16 & SpyBot & AdAware. DustBuster XP & Spider 1.16. DustBuster XP is freeware & MS approved. DustBuster XP is weird or scary to use the first time at least for me. DB is automatic (it cleans junk files etc.) & the first time or two can take 10 minutes. It finds & clears a lot of shit. So I thought it was stuck. lol. Now DB works in 30 seconds or so. DB also respects the integrity of your installed software. To sum it up about DB it's idiot proof. Now for Spider. Also freeware. Spider only works with IE. Think your a clever devil surfing along in IE. Then erasing your tracks. Wrong. IE keeps a secret log of these activities. Everywhere you've been on the net you naughty girl or boy (naughty girls 18+ email me & we'll talk). Anyway Spider finds these hidden logs so you can delete them. Peace

LOL!
Great, but where can I get DustBuster and Spider?

Does Dustbuster delete .dat files? Like the ones kazaa uses to DL stuff with? lol
I used some ghetto program (whoops) and it was supposed to "clean" files... So I scanned it and no virus'... So I copied some test files (.dll's, .dat's, .exe's, .reg... Just a ton of them to see if it deleted any).
Put them all in one folder and pressed, "Clean!" Ha!
Little message came up and said, "Hahaha, your folder has just been erased!"
Luckily I had them clean a folder and not my computer. =D

Do a Google on them. Spider's about 3yrs old & obscure. DB dropped off the map. Go to the freeware sites. Ask around here or another great site iexbeta.com. Sorry can't be more help. Both are old standards for me. Got DB @download.com, not there last time I checked. Don't remember where I got Spider 1.16. Peace.

Joker DB XP is idiot proof. I know. lol. Doesn't remove my dat files or anything else I need. Peace.
Posted by: zapjb
Thats it Gumby. It rocks. Had it for over a year, no problems. Sometimes don't run it for a while. Then it trips me out. It'll remove 2500 files or so & free up like 12MBs.

Only the installation is in Italian, the prog itself is in English :D

lol. That's right. Forgot. Installed over a year ago. I think just the readme files & stuff are in Italian. The proggie itself is english. I think. Don't like it. Don't use it. I like it a lot. Peace.

This is a link to Spider 1.16 http://www.winplanet.com/winplanet/reviews/741/1/ Don't think the first link works, but it's a good read. This link worked for me. http://www.fsm.nl/ward/

Is there anything like dustbuster, that lets you see what its deleting? I'm not a fan of having 500 megs of files deleted with out me knowing what they are....
Posted by: zapjb
Don't know. I didn't trust DB for months. Now I trust it completely. Never screwed me, not even once.

Same here - i tried it (after trusting these guys that the proggy was in english not italian) - and wondered why i should TRUST this proggy at all. I even tried to surf to the link of the distributors - no luck!
Not actually knowing what its doing isnt enough for me to keep on using it because :
zapjb......Now I trust it completely. Never screwed me, not even once.
Sorry zapjb, i want to know what its deleting - isnt that a fair argument before trusting it??
Posted by: zapjb
Look, I understand. I guess what makes it easier for me to trust is I have a backup HDD in my dresser drawer. I Ghost it every 2-4 weeks. So I trust with precautions. lol. Peace.
Posted by: gumby
If it's any consolation, I decided not to keep the DustBuster and Spider program after taking a look at them. I was just looking for a good source for them and was asking if that was the correct link.
However, it doesn't mean that I don't appreciate the advice. I'm just a little finicky, that's all.
I think these little brain sessions are good for pooling together resources, though. The most useful new (to me) apps mentioned here at "Tips" these past few days are that RegCleaner/Power Tools program and Spybot Search & Destroy.
I'd say Paul's program also, but I have XP, not 2000, so I don't really need it. It sounds very useful if you are committed to 2000, however.

".....trust with precautions" - he he...
:D Peace bro :D
BTW gumby, i've been using SpyBot for ages now (i also have XP) - seems good to me too.

Spybot rocks! Right now it's better than Ad-Adware 5.83. Cause AA stopped updating 5.83 to concentrate on AA 6. AA 6 is supposed to be much improved on 5.83 & based on a whole new platform. Excited to see what AA 6's like. Gonna be out by mid Feb. I heard.

Its just a mental thing.. I got dustbuster, and used it, it cleared 500megs of ??? Every thing seemed ok. And then i restored to before i installed it, and tossed it. ;) I need to know what its finding and getting rid of to know its benifiting me....
I Ghost my OS partition, but to ghost the other 60gigs or crap all the time would be a little crazy
Posted by: zapjb
Look you do what you want. I got an extra HDD for peace of mind. It takes 30 minutes every 2-4 weeks. Then I have an exact copy of everything on my computer. That's not crazy to me. :)
Posted by: RAMMAN!
I'm not telling anyone whether or not to use it or trust it. I personally need to know every single thing that is going on with my system, backup or not. All dustbuster is good for is freeing up a little space, no performance benefit. To me a little space is not a big deal and sure not worth the BS I could have to deal with if dustbuster screws something up, system performance is... Window washer, and regclean handle the files that would effect performance, and there are other progs for finding duplicate files jv16 is one of them.
Having a backup of every thing is a must either way. I have had more then 1 hard drive fail, if I had no back up I'd have many years and gigs of all sorts of files gone. (if that happened I think I'd throw all my hardware out and never turn on a computer again... LOL) I now have 2 80gig drives running RAID 0. That means I have twice the chance of losing anything on them. Do I have every thing important backed up? Yes, but I don't find the time to do it as often as you.
ANYWAY... lol the point is the program should give you the option to see what it is going on.... that's all. If anyone feels it does something good for them, knock your self out, but there is no REAL info anywhere on how it is really a benefit besides "cleans garbage files" AND on www.majorgeeks.com (http://www.majorgeeks.com)(that is a great site for downloads by the way) this was reported: Warning Some XP users have reported problems with this software including "...animated characters from search files and folders go missing..."
OK I'm done....

Anyone have any favorite popup killers?
Posted by: zapjb
RAMMAN! that's cool. My fav is Popup Ad Filter by Meaya. It's excellent!
Posted by: gumby
Hi, very interesting.
My favorite popup killer is popupstopper. The Pro version is no better than the Free version either, in my opinion. In fact, I like the Free version better. It's one of those rare instances that happens.
You can find it here if you are interested...

I'm down with spybot too - it does rock! I have now retired ad-aware and my fav popup killer is 'popup eliminator v3.02' since it doesn't slow anything down.
