The Best Movies Nobody Has Heard Of

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Have you ever watched a movie that you'd never heard of and it completely blew you away? What are some of the diamonds in the rough you've uncovered in your time? Maybe they're indie movies, maybe they're forgotten, or maye they're movies that were overshadowed by other releases at the time.

For me, Interstate 60 (http://imdb.com/title/tt0165832/) came out of nowhere and completely rocked my world. It was a straight to video movie written and directed by Bob Gale, of Back to the Future fame. It's a little Alice in Wonderland-ish and definately worth a watch if you can find it.

Some others I'd recommoned are: Brick, Kids, and The Beach.

Let's hear some others.

pi, by david aronofsky. he's such an awesome director but because his movies aren't blockbusters he doesn't get the recognition he deserves. he did requiem for a dream too and it was even better than pi, but less obscure.

If..., directed by Lindsay Anderson and starring Malcolm McDowell.

If..., directed by Lindsay Anderson and starring Malcolm McDowell.

'If' is actually part of a loose trilogy from Lindsay Anderson and Malcolm McDowell's protagonist, Travis.

The sequel was 'O Lucky Man' which follows Travis's adventures after 'If'. It has a brilliant soundtrack by Alan Price and I consider it to be one of the finest films ever made. It has largely the same cast as 'If' with the actors reprising similar roles. Do check it out if you haven't already.

The third film was Britannia Hospital but it fell quite short of the mark imo and is the weakest of the three.

Posted by: clocker

I did see Oh, Lucky Man but never heard of the last one.

If... and Barbarella were paired as a midnight show that ran for much of my college career...the perfect combination of sex and revolution.

Ah, good times.

Yeah I like Aronofsky too. Did you check out The Fountain? I've been meaning to but haven't gotten around to it.

Looked into it, sounds pretty cool, definately going to check it out.:yup:

I never knew about Mirrormask (http://imdb.com/title/tt0366780/) until I saw it on tv, it's now my favorite fantasy movie.

Agreed.

The Last Supper, a movie about morals.

He Loves Me, He loves Me Not
First foreign movie I ever watched and it completely made me interested in more obscure movies. A perfect example of crazy French cinema.

Me and You and Everyone We Know
A weird indie movie, quirky and entertaining.

Brick was a really good movie, a friend recommended it to me when we were watching The Lookout with Joseph Gordon Levitt, which is also pretty good.

I've been meaning to check out Pi and The Fountain, but I haven't gotten around to it. I look forward to checking out the other movies posted here too! This topic is a good idea. :)

John Carpenters' The Thing.

Yes a lot of people know of it, but a lot is absolutely nothing compraed to the majority population. It's sad to see how not very many people at all can remember this film let alone know what it is.

But if its obscurity regardless of "how old", I'd have to say Pi (as mentioned before).

Posted by: sclerozo

"The Naked Prey" starring Cornel Wilde now available as a Criterion release. A gem from the 60's that I have not seen previously.

Posted by: ocanica

El Laberinto del Fauno ^^ actually that's Pan's Labyrinth. I know it had a mainstream release but I doubt many people watched it anyway.

Posted by: ahctlucabbuS

I watched both Interstate 60 and The man from earth. The latter was a dialogue blast. The first one sucked hard. I can't believe I watched it to its end. Based on comments here, you'd think it was a philosophical wonder; it's not. To use an old cliche, I guess it's still all relative

Edit: Nothing too obscure, but if you're into Drama, I enjoyed both Fearless and The Door in the Floor.

Gore Vidal's "Caligula"

Yeah everyone's heard of it and remember it.:ermm:

This movie is not obscure in the least bit.

Try Videodrome in the "not very many people at all can remember this film let alone know what it is".

Gore Vidal's "Caligula"

based on a true story..Caligula was nuttier than a Snickers bar

That movie has full porn in it too.:naughty:

I have that on DVD (with the blue cover).:whistling

I think a lot of people have heard of this (if old enough).

Bob Guccione from Penthouse mag produced it if I'm not mistaken.

Posted by: ahctlucabbuS

Yeah, I heard the same thing. I also have Caligula on DVD actually

I bought it under the pretence that it supposedly was "the most controversial movie ever made"

Plus, it was dirt cheap.

It's certainly enjoyable first time around, if nothing else.

Liberty Heights

One of the best coming of age movies I've ever seen. Not a lot of fanfare for this one. Not sure why. Small budget perhaps.

Notable: Ben Foster, that villanous outlaw in "3:10 to Yuma" plays the lead character on this one. Even now, I'm still amazed these two characters are played by the same guy.

Idiocracy http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387808/

Watch it with an open mind and don't expect too much intelligent humor. The scary part is how true this movie is... or could be.

Don't turn it off after twenty minutes because it's stupid. Watch the whole thing and think about why someone would make it. What the maker is trying to point out.

Perfume, The Story of a Murderer.
Fascinating.
A character like no other I've seen (although, in a weird way, he is reminiscent of Chance from Being There) in a movie where you truly have no idea what will happen at the end.

Both Alan Rickman and Dustin Hoffman are in it (although neither is the main character), so it's weird that I had never even heard of it before.
The cinematography and music are both exceptional.

The experience of watching a movie about smells was kind of like the first time I saw Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon...you know, the first chase scene where everyone is flying all over the place. Within seconds, I was willing to suspend belief and from then on the magic was just part of the story.
Same with Perfume, the protagonist (he can hardly be called a hero) has the "greatest nose in the world" and within a few minutes I found myself drawn into his world...which is quite a feat for a visual medium.

Recommended.

Dead of Night (re-released as Deathdream)

I saw this show when I was about 5 or 6 yrs old many years ago on a movie channel. Over the years I had always remembered this film, but couldn't remember the title or anything else about it really. I never could find it. Then, one day while searching through older horror releases on a retail website, I came across something that sounded familiar. I checked it out on imbd and there it was, the movie I had always remembered from my childhood...this movie is actually much older than I am. I then found it a short time later on Demonoid (I miss Demonoid for that).

It's a great movie for fans of the genre with some great social commentary that is even today very relevant. i would definitely recommend this one.

Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress (film) Based on the 2000 semi-autobiographical novel of the same title by Dai, the film revolves around two young Chinese boys of bourgeoisie backgrounds who were sent to a remote village in Sichuan province for three years of re-education during the Cultural Revolution. They both fell in love with a beautiful local girl, granddaughter of an old tailor and known to everyone as the Little Seamstress. During those years of intellectual oppression, the three found solace and liberation in a collection of banned translated novels by Western authors, among whom their favourite was Balzac. The film explores the themes of youth, love, and freedom in those dark times in China.

I had to watch it twice just to get a clue and still have only a tenuous grip on the whole plotline.
There is a forum devoted to unraveling the timeline but I'm not that devoted.

Still, a very interesting flick.

Posted by: IdolEyes787

Wow you're right clocker,perfect choice.
I remember you mentioning that in another post so I checked it out.It reminded me in some ways like a couple movies from the 60's where you are constantly questioning where the plot is leading you to.

Posted by: clocker

I thought I had a pretty good idea of what was going on till the last third of the film, where the third "time machine" shows up...it was all downhill from there.

It's an interesting movie in one respect because it doesn't bother (or deign) to set up the story at all...it just starts in the middle and leaves it to the viewer to figure out what's going on. Then, just when you think you've caught up, it goes nuts again.

Also interesting because it's so low budget (around $7000, IIRC) yet actually looks very professional.

Posted by: chalice

Primer is a head-fuck and a half.

The whole film is deceptively fluent in solid theoretical science. It really pushes paradox to its' logical/illogical extremes. Most Hollywood time-travel capers focus on one facet of the concept and play that fiddle 'til the end. Primers explores (or at least alludes to) every possible sequence of events having been played out within given parameters.

It also leaves the question... 'What happens when you put one of those boxes inside another, bigger one of those boxes'?

Posted by: clocker

Just a note about my comment re: Primer's budget...don't let that put you off.
I recently saw The Time Machine (the newest version), which had a typical Hollywood budget and thus, a very impressive and beautiful machine to stare at (in a steampunk, Victorian age kinda way).
The Time Machine sucked, despite the budget.

In Primer, the actual chamber is just duct tape and cardboard (in a U-Store-It complex, no less!) but you don't notice or care, they make it seem totally rational and believable.
In fact, a more elaborate chamber would have detracted from the film.

The Man Who Wasn't There- Perfectly nuanced film noir homage from the Coen brothers, starring Billy Bob Thornton and Francis McDormand.

A practically unheralded film from the famous brothers (I wasn't aware of it at all), this black and white confection could have been filmed in the 50's if it wasn't for the odd humor and flying saucers.
Thornton- and everyone else for that matter- smokes very expressively.

Definitely worth a look.

Posted by: IdolEyes787

Watch it with "Blood Simple" and you've got the perfect double bill.

Posted by: clocker

City of Industry- Harvey Keitel and Stephen Dorff.
Keitel plays the wronged survivor of a robbery doublecross.
Dorff- possibly the greatest living player of douchbag heavies- is the guy who done Harvey wrong.
Many people get shot and Lucy Liu flashes some bewbage.

Although rather formulaic (I mean come on, as soon as Dorff shows up you just know things are going to hell...), the film is well put together and acted.
Not a bad way to kill a few hours.

Doublefeature! (can you guess why?)

The New Guy and Evolution.
The New Guy stars DJ Qualls ( I was watching The Core on TV and Qualls' nose caught my attention. Looked him up and came upon this flic...) and (among others) Zooey Deschanel (whom I find disturbingly irresistable) in a somewhat predictable "teen movie". But-and this is a big qualifier- DJ is very charismatic and likeable and the humor is a step above the usual suspects.
I mean really, he does a great George C. Scott as Patton imitation, which is not the reference you'd expect in a film like this.

Plus, there's Zooey.

Evolution- David Duchovney, Orlando Jones, Seann William Scott and Marianne Moore.
Directed by Ivan Reitman, so think Ghostbusters and you've got the recipe.
A trifle, but then again, must everything be GREAT?
Summer entertainment... a beach book for the eyes.

Now, both these films have something in common...anyone care to venture a guess?

The only thing that I can think of is that Qualls and Scott were both in Road Trip but I know I'm really stretching.Hope that you'll reveal the answer soon clocker I'm curious to know.

...but I know I'm really stretching.Hope that you'll reveal the answer soon clocker I'm curious to know.
Well, since this thread is hardly a hotbed of activity and I doubt that anyone else will guess, there's no point in prolonging the suspense.

The song Play That Funky Music, White Boy is featured in both films.
Much like Zooey Deschanel it's a guilty pleasure of mine and to hear it in two unrelated films in two days was striking.

On a unrelated note...
I just got a special edition of Citizen Kane which included as a special feature a documentary called The Battle Over Citizen Kane.
No need to comment on the film itself but the documentary was absolutely amazing, adding an extra richness when appreciating what many consider to be the greatest film ever.
Highly recommended.

where i live nobody has ever heard of lucky number slevin, which was my favourite movie of 2006, and believe it or not in my little country it was released as an stv title, and everyone i tell about the movie can't believe that a movie with so many famous actors didn't even make it to the big screen.
anyway, i also think everyone should watch chan-wook parks trilogy (although it's not actually a trilogy) about revenge, i'm talking about the movies sympathy for mr vengeance, oldboy (probably the most famous of the three) and sympathy for lady vengeance. i knowthose movies i mentioned are not really unknown, but there are too many ppl who haven't seen them.
finally, i want to mention one of my absolute favourites, a movie by a danish director called i kina spiser de hunde (in china they eat dogs). this movie is so hilarious, you just have to see it!

BEGOTTEN! arguably by far the greatest horror movie ever made...

Posted by: clocker

The TV Set- David Duchovny and Sigourney Weaver.

Duchovny is a writer trying to shepherd his script into production for Weaver's network.

Oddly, I had just finished the book Sit, Ubu, Sit by Gary David Goldberg (creator of Family Ties and Spin City), which goes into some detail about behind the scenes of TV shows and this movie, although satirically hyped, is very consistent with Goldberg's descriptions.

Duchovny seems very comfortable in these smaller, normal-guy type roles and Sigourney is just good in everything, so the movie is quite watchable and occasionally very funny.

Employee of the Month (2004)- Matt Dillon, Christina Applegate (nom!) and Steve Zahn.

Not to be confused with the 2006 Dane Cook film of the same title. Actually, do not confuse anything with Dane Cook in it as a real movie.
This film, a Sundance winner, got a lot of really pissed off reviews and sank quickly but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Anything I say about the plot would require a spoiler alert, so I'll remain mum, but...
-Make sure you watch the credits all the way to the end and...
-Jenna Fischer (Pam from The Office) has a small role as a hooker so if you ever dreamed of hearing Pam talk dirty, here's your chance.

Color Me Kubrick- John Malkovich

Any movie with JM in it is worth a look, I mean, come on...he's got to have one of the weirdest cv's in all of filmdom.
In this film ( billed as "A true...ish story") he plays Alan Conway, a man in London circa 1990 who (pretty) successfully passed himself off as Stanley Kubrick.
Despite not looking anything like the famous director nor even knowing anything about Kubrick's films, Conway scammed money, sex (with boys mostly) and travel from various gullible folk...all of whom were thrilled at first and too embarrassed later to press charges.

Malkovich envisions Conway as an outrageous fabulist with a totally outre fashion sense (which doesn't faze any of the victims because Kubrick is famous and therefore probably semi-crazy).

It's always fun to see what JM will do in a film and this is no exception.

The Ghost and the Darkness (1996)

Set in 1898, this movie is based on the true story of two lions in Africa that killed 130 people over a nine month period, while a bridge engineer (Val Kilmer) and an experienced old hunter (Michael Douglas) tried to kill them.

Not unknown but not widely seen double bill:

High Fidelity (2000)In a hilarious homage to the music scene, Rob and the wacky, offbeat clerks that inhabit his store expound on the intricacies of life and song all the while trying to succeed in their adult relationships.John Cusack at his most endearing and early work from Jack Black.

Empire Records(1995)A day in the life of the employees of Empire Records. Except this is a day where everything comes to a head for a number of them facing personal crises - can they pull through together? Renee Zellweger before she was a star and a very young Liv Tyler.

Both left me totally entertained and feeling pretty good about life .Who could ask for anything more?

High Fidelity (2000)...

An excellent pairing and so true...isn't entertainment the name of the game?

Here's another-

Hollywoodland- Adrien Brody, Diane Lane and Ben Affleck.
Titularly about the suicide(?) of the original Superman- George Reeves- this film explores the nature and price of fame. As Reeves, Ben Affleck is amazingly good and the period detail is spot on (yeah, I'm old enough to know...).

A Simple Plan- Bill Paxton, Billy Bob Thornton and Bridget Fonda.
Nothing is simple when three small town guys find a stash of cash.
Outside of Fargo I can't think of another movie that so beautifully integrates the weather (mostly snow) into the feel of the film- in fact, Fargo and A Simple Plan would make a great pairing.

Posted by: IdolEyes787

Nice movies with great casts clocker.
I think that Ben Affleck, like Brendan Fraser is looked down upon more for his choice of roles than actual acting ability.Given something to work with like Alleck here or Fraser in Gods and Monsters they acquit themselves well.

Just a note, until I saw Hollywoodland I wasn't aware that the true fate of the original Man of Steel remains one of the great Hollywood mysteries.
Another is portrayed in Auto Focus a movie dealing with the perverse life and mysterious death of 60's television icon Bob Crane of Hogan's Heroes fame.
Worth a glimpse but the film never approaches the quality of Hollywoodland though.

Posted by: clocker

Man, i tried to like Gods and Monsters- tried twice, in fact- but just couldn't get engaged enough to finish it.
I do however think your point about choices over ability is right on the money.
It's kind of funny how some actors are easily forgiven for horrible choices (Sean Connery in The Avengers, for instance) while others are forever branded with one bad move (Gigli).

The Straight Dope (http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mreeves.html) has a concise summary of the circumstances of Reeves' death if you want a different perspective.

Another great movie (perhaps also less known to the masses) I would recommend is Bigger Than The Sky.

Very impressive Amy Smart movie, about the real theatre scene.

Any fan of small theatre troupes should watch this.

Would you recommend that Hollywoodland flick and Smokin' Aces Idol?

Will check A Simple Plan out clocker (Fargo (the 1940's flick) pwns).

OK then, my library has it and I've got it on reserve.

I think that anyone who appreciates a well made movie would enjoy Hollywoodland Shaman.Great acting and a plot that keeps you interested until the end.
Smokin' Aces (you can almost tell by the title)is one of those films that you are either going to love or hate.
Definitely a guy flick that in my opinion tries way too hard to be cool .It's overly complicated for this type of movie but it more or less comes together at the end.Don't really need to warn you but it's a lot bloodier than you'd expect.
You'll probably like it but it would never go on your list of all-time favorite movies.

This is confusing- but I'm still working my first gallon of coffee, so maybe it's just me.

A Simple Plan and Fargo are a perfect movie pairing.
Two executions of the same idea, both very well done.
Fargo is funnier.

A similar- albeit far less satisfying- double feature would be L.A. Confidential and Mulholland Falls.
Again, many similar plot points but I thought Mulholland Falls sucked.
As neo-noir homages, they both pale in comparison to Chinatown but L.A. Confidential is a very strong movie and worthy of it's rep.

Dunno why I'm rambling on about these films- they are hardly unknown- might be the lack of caffeine.

Chinatown made me think of Jack of course and that made me think of Five Easy Pieces and one of my all time favorite scenes.(it also made me think of Polanski and The Fearless Vampire Hunters but that's another story).

firstborn (1984)

a great performance by peter weller. also notable are robert downey jr and sarah jessica parker early in their careers.

OK, Bigger Than the Sky came in.
Sadly (or not), the disk glitched out about 20 minutes into the film (I get my movies from the library and many of them are scratched/damaged in ways that lead me to believe that some people have yet to grasp optical media technology) and I almost felt a sense of relief.
Can't say I'd been engaged at all.
To be fair though I'm going to try again and see if I can't get into it (I gave Gods and Monsters two tries and that is my limit).

Smokin' Aces, on the other hand.
Ah, what hath Quentin Tarantino wrought?
Despite some gaping plot holes (how did he make a full head mask in under an hour and how do the Tremor Brothers drive around in their Mad Max get up without attracting the attention of every Barney Fife in America?), the film was an adrenaline charged guilty pleasure.
A cameo by Jason Bateman was an unexpected bonus.

In the extras section, Ben Affleck states that this is the first time he's been killed in a movie...guess he's buried the memory of Hollywoodland where he dies multiple times, Roshimon-style.
Finally, can anyone tell me what kind of accent Andy Garcia was going for?

Posted by: IdolEyes787

You mentioned Tarantino so I thought I'd throw in Boondock Saints(1999) which employs the same kind of non-linear storytelling as Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction but takes it to a whole other level.
Clever, funny, and extremely violent,it tells the story of two Irish- Irish brothers (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus) who after gettng into a brawl in their favorite bar with a couple Russian gangsters decide they are on a mission from God to eliminate criminals from the city.
Along the way they are pursued by a gay F.B.I. agent(an awesome Willem Dafoe).
The release of "The Boondock Saints" was sidelined in 1999 because of the Columbine massacre but the film has since attained cult-like status.
Get the unrated version if you have a chance but be prepared for almost non-stop profanity and some real gore(also one of the greatest and strangest gun battles I've ever seen).

Kontroll. Hungarian film set completely in the Budapest Metro. Very dark but really good.

Slither (2006)-Horror/gore/comedy.
Nathan Fillion (Firefly/Serenity) is the Chief of police in a small town overrun by alien lifeforms.
Extremely gooey and sporadically funny, I'm really surprised this film didn't do better than it did...fucking Meet the Spartans made more money.
I'll give anything Fillion is in a look ( just like Jason Lee) and this film has my second unexpected cameo by Jenna Fischer in under two weeks (she's married to the writer/director).

Recommended by my favorite film reviewer- Brian Prisco, who writes "Hangover Theater" at Pajiba.com.

Posted by: IdolEyes787

Nathan Fillion's great but for some reason he seems to be the touch of death to projects.
Hope he finds some success soon because he really is one of my favorite actors.
Didn't realize he was in Saving Private Ryan til I just checked out his profile on IMDB

Spellbound- a documentary following eight contestants through the 1999 National Spelling Bee.
The kids are charming (with one exception, IMO), the parents range from hyper-competitive (one kid gets grilled on 7000 words a DAY!) to pretty laid back and the actual competition is more gripping than I would have imagined.

OK, the material isn't earthshaking and the outcome doesn't much matter- except to the contestants and their families- but this documentary does just what it's supposed to- open a view into a world you're not familiar with.

Did you know that the final is covered live on ESPN?

Posted by: IdolEyes787

The finals our national spelling bee gets major network coverage too clocker.
I watched a bit of it and Scripps and they left me both admiring and feeling sorry for the kids.

I've heard of spellbound but I've never seen it.I can recommend another spelling bee movie though.

Akeelah and the Bee,a good little movie that suffers from a bad title, tells the story of 11 year old girl who lives in South Central Los Angeles. Akeelah is a gifted student who must overcome personal challenges and the prejudices within her community in order to make her way to the National Spelling Bee.
The film is both funny and touching-a great movie to watch with the whole family.

Bad Boy Bubby (1993). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106341/

A truly unique Australian film. Not sure how obscure it is really. A few years ago I caught on late night tv and was simultaneously appalled and mesmerised by it. Stumbled upon it again the other day and re-watched it yesterday. Very impressive indeed.

Out-fucking-standing performance from Nicholas Hope. Sick, funny, profound and harrowing.

Watch it or do something else

Brick.
Classic film noir down to it's toes, this film incorporates every beloved meme from the genre (molls, broads, corrupt authorities, the jaded much harrassed hero and a plot so murky it's almost impenetrable)...the difference being that everyone is 17 and still in high school.
What could- no...should- be unintentionally hilarious, turns out to be fairly interesting and engaging.

I recommend it simply because some of these people are going to show up in mainstream movies pretty soon and it's fun to see where they started.

Oh, pshaw.
For every small, quality film that manages to break big (think Juno or Little Miss Sunshine) there are dozens of equally deserving films that fly right under the radar and never garner the attention they (might) deserve.
If you have a big star and the might of a studio advertising budget at your disposal, you can get any piece of dreck on thousands of screens- The Love Guru, anybody?- and while those screens are being wasted, better films are going unwatched.

Unless you are fortunate enough to live near an independent (arthouse) theater, chances are good that your only choices are going to be the big, blockbuster films...that's what sells popcorn and coke and THAT's where the money is.

Lollilove-written, directed and starring Jenna Fischer (The Office).

A Hollywood "power couple" (Fischer and real life husband James Gunn) decide to give back to the less fortunate.
Casting about for a suitable outlet, they decide to form the Lollilove foundation and combat homelessness by handing out candy.
To the homeless.

It goes about as well as you might expect.

Shot on no budget over the course of @ two years, the film has the feel of an extended skit and depends overly much on being familiar with the actual people- how do you know they're kidding if you don't know how they actually are?- it's still slyly amusing and hey...it's got a lot of Jenna.

Posted by: clocker

Breakfast On Pluto- Cillian Murphy, Liam Neeson.
Director Neil Jordan's second venture into a story featuring the Irish "troubles" with a transgender lead (his first, 1993's The Crying Game), this film succeeds- very much like Transamerica- because you end up caring about a character who is (probably) unlike anyone in your real life.

The tone of the movie is hard to grasp (there are talking robins, fer crissake) but Murphy completely sells the role of Patrick (or "Kitten" as she would prefer to be called), who may be a saint or just a deluded idiot...it's hard to tell and ultimately, doesn't matter.

I liked it a lot.

Krull (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085811/) (1983)

"From the sky will come the Black Fortress. From the Fortress will come the Slayers to devour the planet of Krull. Then shall a girl of ancient name become queen...she shall choose a king...and together they shall rule the planet. And their son shall rule the galaxy."

Great music too. It was the first album I collected that was big band/orchestra/symphony, etc.

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon-comedy/slasher.
A grad school film crew documents a nascent serial killer as he prepares to follow his heroes- Jason, Freddie, Michael Myers, et al.- in the slaughter of clueless teens.
Turns out, being a psycho killer is a lot more work than we imagined ("You wouldn't believe the amount of cardio I have to do. I mean, it's ridiculous!") and there are definite rules to follow (the "survivor girl" must be a virgin).
If you want to pad your bodycount, you pick on stoners because "they don't move as fast".
The monster-in-training, Leslie, is completely charming and forthright about how and why he's going to do this and the film crew is totally on board with the whole project.

Naturally, things go a little bit haywire...

The slasher genre is not my cuppa tea but this film was amusingly self-referential and extremely well acted and produced.
Real fans of "slice and dice"ers ought to love it.

No man's land is very good. It got oscar for best foreign movie but I don't know which year (maybe 2004). Its a war movie between bosnians and serbians. I really recommend it.

Ripley's Game- John Malkovich.
This film was never theatrically released in the US for some bizarre reason, although it has been shown on cable.
Malkovich plays an older Tom Ripley (you're probably more familiar with Matt Damon's younger version in The Talented Mr. Ripley) who is a cultured psychopath on the level of Hannibal Lector but without all the baroque affectations.
"I don't worry about getting caught because I don't believe anyone is watching".
He's right.

Certainly one of Malkovich's best performances.

Near Dark(1987)

Director Kathryn Bigelow's gorgeous and gory 1987 film about a family of vampires who roam the modern West in a van never achieved the recognition it deserved.

Starring Adrian Pasdar(Heroes),Bill Paxton and Lance Henriksen and with a score by Tangerine Dream it is a times both beautiful and terrifying.Without a doubt one of the best horror movies of the 80's.

Watch out for the bar scene.:fear:

Posted by: clocker

Near Dark is quite a divisive film, IMO.
Personally, I didn't like it but I know folks who do.

Maybe it's the crude nature of the vamps- essentially they're trailer trash with superpowers- or maybe the complete lack of self-awareness- they kill (in big, sloppy massacres like the bar scene you cite) and feed and that's about all.
Where's the romance in an eternal life like that?
I'm not saying they need to be complete fags like Cruise and Pitt but a bit of culture would be nice.

And finally, what's up with that cure?

Posted by: seedman

Joe vs. the Volcano, priceless.

Near Dark was made a time when the romanticism of the vampire was barely nascent.Kathryn Bigelow also made it a point that the killers in her film are never even referred to as vampires so they didn't have to adhere to certain rules.

That being said I'm more of a vampire as animal devotee(a la Salem's Lot or a film I think you said you admired Shadow of the Vampire)but at the same time not a big fan of gore .
Don't really like my bloodsuckers as romantic leads, although I got a kick out of Chris Saradon in Fright Night.

If you dig the romance Clocker you should be aware of the upcoming film Twilight. It's garnered a bit of buzz.

Posted by: clocker

It ain't so much the "romance", I'd just prefer something less one dimensional.

I'd like to think that, given the option-eternal life with heightened abilities, I could do more than just slaughter people and sleep.
In a way, that's just Supersize Me with more hemoglobin.

Also-and I'm aware of the problem in applying logic to the genre-I was was struck by the implausibility of a band of homicidal maniacs remaining undetected in such a low population area as the American Southwest.
That roadhouse slaughter probably wiped out 10% of the people in that shithole little town and the Near Dark gang had to do that every night...even Barney Fife would start to wonder after a week or so.

Anyways, this is probably overanalyzing the film.
It is what it is and at least there wasn't a slew of sequels to bleed out whatever impact it originally had.

2 Days in the Valley(1996).

Someone once described it as Pulp Fiction meets Short Cuts and that isn't too far from the mark.

The plot ,though much too complicated to easily explain, involves disparate characters brought together by an Olympic hopeful's plot to knock off her ex.

The film has gratuitous sex, intense violence, black comedy and an extremely competent killer with a thing for his stop watch.

A terrific cast but special mention should be made of James Spader as the afore mentioned killer and a truly dazzling Charlize Theron in her first credited role.

2 Days in the Valley(1996).

I was surprised to see that my library has this in stock...should be here today.

Shattered Glass- Hayden Christensen, Peter Sarsgaard, Chloe Sevigny.
Fascinating true story of Stephen Glass, a wunderkind DC journalist for The New Republic in the mid to late nineties. In his brief career, Glass went from fact-checker/researcher to star writer on the basis of exclusive stories filled with amazing details and twists.
Particularly easy since it turned out he was completely making them up.
Historically significant because he was brought down by Forbes Online and this is considered the first major coup by an internet based journalist.

The movie totally succeeds in making a rather dull profession absorbing- much like All The President's Men- and the acting and tone is spot on.
The darling of the independent film circuit, Shattered Glass did poorly in general release (I'd never heard of it before)- probably because there are no robots or sex (or robot sex).
Recommended.
