this is an easy one, your keyboard has been set to a different area, e.g its set to us and your in uk.
to cahnge it go into regional and language settings in control panel. languages tab, then click details, might be different for 9x but will be roughly the same,

Sounds like you've got a british keyboard but your locale is set for US.
You need to tell us your OS before we can tell you the best way to fix it.

But if you are using win2k or XP you can look in control panel/regional options and look at the your locale, the system (default) locale and the input locale. It is pretty obvious what to change.

Btw, this is one of the most common mistakes made in windows setup.

i no i had this problem before. with my pc i got home edition (XP). i was curious to see what XP Pro had. when i installed it, it gave me the option to change the regional settings whilst installing.
when i later returned to XP HOME it didnt give me the option to change my regional settings back so i was stuck with " @ # all mixed up.

tuk me ages to figure out how to change it! even bought a new keyboard <_<
