I'm simply amazed at the number of people who have named singers who are obviously not European. Then again, there are very few current female solo musicians that don't produce some obscure style of music.
Seeing as Georgia (the country in the Caucasus region) barely - but still - counts to Europe, Katie Melua is probably the most "pop"ular female singer today. I have loved Dolores O'Riordan since I've known her as a lead singer for the Cranberries from the early 1990's, but the probably greatest female voice is Sarah Brightman.

I think I'm a complete chauvinist because I don't listen to any female singers...however, recently I had two revelations:
1) the video of Cyndi Lauper's "Money Changes Everything" has been playing a lot on Vh1 Classic and her voice just blows me away...
