max resolution 1680x1050 1080p???

i've seen a few 22" monitors with this resolution advertised as 1080p....how can this be if 1080p is 1920x1080?

A 1080p signal has 1920 pixels horizontally.
That is why you will sometimes see the actual resolution of the 1080p format designated as 1920x1080.
1680 x1080 is basically the same it just has a slightly different aspect ratio.

22" monitors are not capable of 1920x1200 unless it was a TV but even then I wouldn't be so sure if 22" LCD TVs have 1920x1080.
I've on idea why they are saying 1680x1050 is 1080P because obviously its only 1050P and not 1080P.

i hooked up one of those monitors to my ps3. and it was able to go up to 1080p, but it did not look good. 720p looked better.

It most likely does some kind of compression so it could handle the 1080P signal but I doubt it is displaying true 1080P.
Give a link to one of the monitors you are talking about so I can probably give you a better answer.

The monitor can accept a 1080p signal, but not display it properly.

resolution of that is 1920 x 1200... so it'd look fine.
