Music Trivia - Let's See How Good You Are!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: DasFox

If the mods would like, this might be a nice post to make for music trivia.

Anyhow here's my question, let's see how good your music knowledge is.

Question:
As big as the Beatles were in the USA, what band was just as big in the UK?

Posted by: Skizo

The Monkeys?

I think they were big in the UK.

I assume you're talking about an American band?

Abba ?

Posted by: clocker

Rolling Stones.

Posted by: Septimus

The Beatles also in the UK haha

Posted by: bigboab

Other than the Beatles - The Rolling Stones(British), Beach Boys(U.S.A.).
There are that many to choose from, both sides of the Atlantic. A few of them better than the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Just did not get the Hype that they did.:)

Posted by: Barbarossa

Westlife

Posted by: t0mmy

spice girls.. ok but has anyone got the answer yet?

Posted by: DasFox

Nope no one has got it right yet... :(

Posted by: SCR

I will go with : OASIS ... seeing that the answer isn`t given yet.

Posted by: T.S.O.L.

oasis came DECADES after the beatles

Posted by: IdolEyes787

The Dave Clark 5?

Posted by: DasFox

Nope not yet guys, keep trying... ;)

Posted by: clocker

Can you rephrase the question a bit to make it more precise?
I mean, the Beatles were popular in the US for a number of years so when exactly are we talking about?
And "just as big" in what way...number of hits or the object of such attention?

Posted by: pusher

I'm bumping this so we can finally get the answer.

I'm going to say that if it's an American act, then Elvis (even though he's obviously not a band.) If it's another UK act, then Queen.

Posted by: lolapa

The who?

Posted by: Septimus

U2?

Posted by: Voco

Abba

Posted by: antonii

Nirvana ...I don`t know it`s hard to say ;-]

Posted by: trebor31

the question is confuzin, but am gonna quess The Jacksons.

Posted by: DasFox

Nope sorry guys no one yet, and the question is simply this:

As big as the Beatles became in the USA, who was just as big in the UK?

PEACE

Posted by: IdolEyes787

I think that people are confused by the question Fox.
Does it mean an American group popular in England or does country of origin matter?
Also are we taking contemporaries of the Fab Four or any era?
Going by the criteria American group popular in Britain at the same time that the Beatles invaded the US, I''d say The Beach Boys.

Posted by: chalice

The Beach Boys were never as big as The Beatles in the UK.

Granted, there was a firm, artistic rivalry, which helped both bands creatively but as far as record sales go, The Beatles kicked Brian Wilson's arse from here to the moon.

Agreed, the question is mental and unless he wants to rephrase it, you'd have to be an autistic savant to get the answer. An autistic savant who can read minds over the interweb.

Posted by: brotherdoobie

The question is a bit mental. Can we have some clarification, please?

-bd

Posted by: Septimus

Was someone close to the answer?

Posted by: Chewie

Fucking ambiguous question, if you ask me.

Big in what way?
I mean, Spice Girls & Westlife both had more consecutive number one singles than The Beatles in the UK but their sales don't compare at all and album success for both is inferior by far.

Posted by: DasFox

It's not really complicated, if you were around living when the Beatles were around then I guess you'd understand better, sorry...

I'm talking about everything that represents the fame and popularity of the Beatles, whatever you know of or can think of, SIMPLY put, the Beatles were BIG in the USA during their time...

So as big as the Beatles were, popular, successful, a band that brought change to to the face of music, everything they were and did, etc...

There is a band that was just as big as they were in all the ways they were in the UK.

Ok we go it now?

And no one has got it right yet, so keep digging boys and girls... ;)

PEACE

Posted by: chalice

Right, I still haven't got a clue what you're on about.

So I'm plucking 2 names out of a hat.

Pink Floyd or Led Zep.

Posted by: pusher

How about a new question since we're three pages in and no one has apparently come close to an answer?

Here's a simple one:

What was the second video aired on MTV?

Posted by: Biggles

I'm going with The Kinks

Posted by: IdolEyes787

Here's a simple one:

What was the second video aired on MTV?

Anyone can google that answer pusher -"You Better Run" by Pat Benatar-at least Fox's question if vague is interesting.
No one I know was around in that era:whistling but I heard a little band called "The Who "was pretty culturally influential.
But I really think Biggles has the right answer.

Posted by: chalice

But the Kinks were never a 'big' as The Beatles in the UK. Not by a million miles.

No-one was. The Beatles were just as popular in the UK as they were in America. More so because they are a national treasure.

The closest anyone came to The Beatles in the UK was Elvis and he's not even a band, like.

Posted by: IdolEyes787

I was getting around to editing my post. The Kinks were a very culturally influential band but they never challenged the Beatles in terms of sheer popularity of course.
Just trying to get the best answer taking everything into account.
All I can add is Fox you'd better have a pretty good answer and give some facts to support it.

Posted by: maged918

The Doors, Cream , Hendrix?

Posted by: Skizo

I'm ready for a new question; appears we're all fed up with this one. :dabs:

Posted by: Biggles

It is prolly Cliff and the Shadows :)

Posted by: chalice

I never thought of Cliff and The Shadows, like.

And I never will again.

Posted by: Biggles

I never thought of Cliff and The Shadows, like.

And I never will again.

:glag:

Just as well I never mentioned The Seekers

.... ooops

Posted by: DasFox

Oh don't be a bunch of cry babies and give up so easy, LOL...

No one has the answer yet...

Maybe a bit longer and I'll give a clue... ;)

PEACE

Posted by: chalice

Actually, nobody gives a fuck anymore.

Please deposit your answer in whichever orifice isn't being jammed with your own pish.

Thank you.

Ok guys someone else's turn at a Trivia Question.... :D

PEACE

Posted by: kojin

huzzah!

but I think TSOL named that one first...

Posted by: IdolEyes787

Joy Division?
Get stuffed.Joy Division is a footnote,a trivia question.
Here I've got a question for you-Which English band that only released two mediocre albums don't I care at all about?
Answer see above.

Joy Division:frusty:

Posted by: kojin

to each his own I guess...

anyway,

New Question:

Which 'Japanoise' band gained a cult following after being introduced to western culture by Sonic Youth and Warner Music Imports?

Posted by: clocker

Joy Division?
You're fuckin kidding, right?

Posted by: kojin

Joy Division?
You're fuckin kidding, right?Obvious answer is obvious.

Get over it.

Posted by: IdolEyes787

Joy Division?
You're fuckin kidding, right?Obvious answer is obvious.

Get over it.

Kojin I don't profess to know as much about music as you or TSOL but I have the big advantage of at least being alive then. I can tell you Joy Division was never as big as the Beatles not by half.
And if you want to talk about obvious being obvious maybe you should look at your answer to "who's the best girl singer" and then read the question more carefully.
Okay now I'm over it.

Posted by: clocker

Joy Division?
You're fuckin kidding, right?Obvious answer is obvious.

Get over it.
Get over what?
I'd love to see what parameters were used to arrive at this answer.

Posted by: clocker

OK Fox, I'm callin you out.
Get back over here and justify this Joy Division nonsense.

You owe us.

Posted by: kojin

Get over what?the question bro

Posted by: brotherdoobie

OK Fox, I'm callin you out.
Get back over here and justify this Joy Division nonsense.

^Disagreed. I enjoyed Joy Division's two albums. They were great. New Order wasn't half bad, either. However, they were never the equal of the Beatles. No convoluted logic is going to convince me otherwise.

However, I would like to hear his reasoning. Agreed.
