red alert 2 is the best i guess.both story and the gameplay was great.emperor was also a great success. Also there was a game named "war games" back in old times, that was great too.To make it short, C&C series rock, which makes Westwood a great company, or it was...
Posted by: zero0
ya c&c rocks i cant wait until red alert 3 released

Black and White, Populus, Civilization, Chess

AoE3 is total shite because of that card crap.
BEST strategy game of all time is no doubt Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings, and Age of Empires II: The Conqueror's Expansion.
After the podium, which is UNARGUABLY pwned by AoE2, we have a few unworthy successors; things like Starcraft, and Warcraft III, and maybe that Red Alert thing. Oh and Populus: The Beginning (that was a trippy one!)
And that's RTS for ya in a nutshell.
Historical RTS is awesome, but Sci-Fi RTS can be entertaining too. HRTS FTW though. Oh, and I almost forgot, that game Empire Earth, the first one, had a cool WW2 campaign. Other than that it was pretty much a pooper (oh and the fact that with cheats you could use robots to crumple an opponent still in the Dark or Bronze Age. So yeah, pretty insane aspect there too, but that was all)

AoE 2
AoE 3
AoM
and Star wars Galactic battleground (same as AoE 2 but with the Star Wars´characters)
Posted by: Grind$oFine
I like AoE3 a lot, but I haven't really played any other strategy games. :ermm:
I suppose I'll have to check out the other things mentioned in this thread. :shifty:

WarCraft (if you like online which it offers free) and no i do not mean WoW. WC2 was great but WC3 is even better. the hero system is the best and the races are siiiick. strategy is so challenging and teams are intense, mass micro and macro for pros all the way.

Red Alert II
AoE (all of them)

Age of Empires II.
Good looking at its time, excellent gameplay and great story telling.
Posted by: The Flying Cow
Ri0T knows what he's talking about.
AoE2 still looks good nowadays, and it's so light on sys req. The game/graphics/physics engine is so well crafted they made something like 2 official patches to fix minor imbas.
That's saying something, when you compare it to games like Warcraft III RoC and TFT. They are still making patches for those, and the game and it's expansion remain imbalanced and a pain in the neck to try to tackle (i.e. Night Elfs are clearly overpowered, and Undead are too weak).
AoE2 and it's expansion is still #1. Maybe SC2 will come to take it's place, but it'll be a hard task.

^^ I agree, but you know the best thing about it that until today (I've been playing this game for 4 years now, another friend of mine has been since it was released) is that we are always discovering new strategies and game mechanics and every time we think that it would be the last technique we would find but still we'd find something new, an eternal masterpiece.
SC2 will have a VERY hard time trying to take AoE2's place, its cause developers just cram a huge amount of stuff into newer strategy games that players very shortly become confused of the excessive variety.
AoE2 has 5 or 6 main military buildings but has infinite depth.
great work microsoft!

Starcraft & C&C!
Posted by: Ali-g
For some reason I jst happen to hate C&C, alothough I like strategy games.
If u asked me for the best Id go for Heroes of MM series (if that can be called strategy, as its a turn-based RPG) then for some RTS id go for Rise of Nations, and Battle for Dune an oldie which I can never forget of.
Posted by: n0_0ne
I've always liked starcraft, used to play that game a lot. Medieval Total war II is one of my favorites now, great game
Posted by: SolarisWind
Am I allowed to nominate a handheld game? I vote for Tactics Ogre:Knight of Lodis on Gameboy advance. It was a surprisingly good tactics/strategic/rpg for a handheld. The story, the gaming mechanics, the characters, the battles...extremely fun. Truly one of the many missed gems that must be played at least once in your lifetime. I recommend that game to everyone who has a GBA.

Medieval 2 Total War
Posted by: carnas
My favourite strategy game is probably Alpha Centauri, closely followed by Civ 4. As far as RTS goes, I used to play a heap of Total Annihilation, now I play Sup Com. Also liked the original AoE more than the sequels.

red alert 3
