Okay this is probably an over used topic, but how exactly do they "pin" you with one of those supeonas. I mean i know a little about computers but im not as advanced, so can someone please tell me in laymans terms what the f#%@ is going on. I mean can they really shut down file sharing or is this all a big scare, and how do they do it???

they do it through your ip address, every internet connection has an ip address that for example looks like this 127.25.21.3, riaa moniters this address and sees where it goes what connects to it and if possible what files its sharing :angry:

Dude you need to relax RIAA need prove the you're downloading illegal files just format your drve if youe ever get letter, even better fucking burn the shit because i don't trust hard drive they could be brought back. and if the justice system work in this fucking country maybe you will get way with it. if i ever get cought i am calling my lawyer and i will stress out my freedom of fair use and RIAA is invating my freedom , isn't this country base on freedom ? i guess not

The riaa is not doing much of anything, most of the tracking, if not all is done by a third party like MediaDefender. Basically, if they search for a file and you have it shared, they'll make note of the filename, filesize, your nickname, your ip, and the time.
This information will be forwarded to the RIAA so they can file an information suponea for an ISP to reveal your name, address, and possibly email.
Your internet provider may or may not contact you at first.
What should you do? First off, You should also ensure you have the option to see shared files disabled. If you're that scared, share fewer files and use kazaa only occasionally.
For people saying don't be scared, don't be so naive. The odds are definitely against you being caught but it can happen. It's a terrible strategy to sue potential customers but it may/may not be bluff. If you're like me going into University, fines that crazy would destroy me (and my parents for that matter).
But I'm sharing all the time cause Canada's a piracy haven. ;)

In a USA TODAY story this morning not yet published online (USA Today - August 13, 2003 - Page 3D), Mike Snider reports that Sacramento attorney Daniel Ballard will be taking the fight back to the music industry with the expected filing this week of a lawsuit against the RIAA.
USA TODAY reports that as of this date, more than 1,200 subpoenas have been issued, and court clerks are seeing more every day.
One such subpoena recepient, known currently only as "Jane Doe," has hired Ballard to sue the RIAA for not proving that illegal file distribution actually occured on her machine.
"Just because a user's PC has music stored within a peer-to-peer file-sharing program doesn't mean the user is illegally distributing copyrighted material," said Ballard.
"Distribution implies sending, rather than leaving something where it may be taken," Ballard added.
Because the RIAA is currently requesting subpoenas based on searching for song titles and corresponding users' IP addresses, Ballard believes he has a strong case because the RIAA apparently doesn't actually attempt to download songs found on users' systems to prove that distribution has occured.
Fred von Lohmann, at attorney for the EFF, told USA TODAY that the suit brings "another dimension to the fight."
IN RELATED DEVELOPMENTS --
Verizon's appeal against the court decision which got the RIAA started with their blizzard of subpoenas is scheduled for September 16.
Columbia University has joined two colleges in Massachusetts in their motions to quash the subpoenas issued against their students for being "defectively" filed in the wrong circuit court.
The RIAA has complied with subpoenas issued by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee of Investigations, turning over copies of all of its subpoenas against file swappers. Chairman Senator Norm Coleman, (R-Minn.) demanded the information and is concerned about potential subpoena power abuse by the RIAA and others.
Users are holding their breath to see if the RIAA actually files suit against them. The RIAA claims it will begin suing users in stages (probably a few hundred at a time) beginning later this month or early September.

It is no use.You have to "Shred" your files(Overwritten them 99 times or so),or they can still recover all of them.

Zone Alarm by it self will not stop the Automated searching bots. I had Zone Alarm running when I got a pm from the RIAA.

They did this by package sniffing.....ZoneAlarm can't block package sniffing,because they read your package BEFORE they arrive at your computer.

D8888, would you please provide us with a list of working socks5 proxies to work with kazaa? I have found only two in the past that work (unreliably, of course), and provided horrible speeds. The anon socks5 proxy is the perfect solution, of course, but finding one is nearly impossible...

What is true?
- everytime you get into the internet through Dialup - when you are 24h cable in
the net you have static ip, means all the time same ip, i do not know exactly I only have Dialup - you get a new ip from your ISP - Internet Service Provider - wehere you dialin => If the RIAA has your IP at the time your Dialin they can ask your ISP
to give them your phone number - cause many ISPs have log files where the phone number of the people who dialin at a certain time are logged.
Some ISPs does not give this privacy information out - but if the ISPs give the privacy informartions out means the phone number - depends on what you've done
if you e.g. have shared CHILD PORN many ISPs in Germany would give it to the police what is good in these case to prevent violence against children :) But anyway, what you'Ve done it depends on each individual acitons whether your ISPs
give out these privacy informations :)
That is what could be done - I know that cause when I was younger wrote - yeah it was my mistake and little bit missunderstanding but it is long ago - the ISPs give out to another ISP informations that should show I was sending spam - although this was misunderstanding - I hate spam on my own - my account at the ISP was banned :) I an opened also if it is difficult :) I am just human and so you are aren't you? oh alien, sorry :)
