Broken is right, although for the purpose of experimenting you might be able to find some possibilities:
perhaps your provider has a newsserver carrying binary groups
you can try a service: Trial Usenet Access (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/f-newsgroups-79/t-freetrial-usenet-access-290943)
Teranews gives you 50MB / day once verified - no good retention though
readnews.com without account needed
