Signal Quality Loss/deterioration

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: 3rd gen noob

as some of you already know, i should be getting adsl by next wednesday
i got the modem (alcatel usb (please don't say ethernet is better than usb, i'm not bothered...)) today and i tried to setup the modem and the filters earlier on.
however, i came to a problem in that my phone jack/socket is rather a distance from the computer
this means i need to buy an rj11 adsl extension lead for between my modem and filter.
the distance between the comp and the filter is just a little over 10 metres.
i've been looking for extension leads and i've found either a 10 or a 15m cable.
now, the 10m cable is quite possibly going to be too short, though i could move the computer around a little to suit i suppose.
however, i'd prefer things to stay as they are currently, therefore i'd like to buy the 15m cable

however, i've been thinking about the deterioration of the signal strength caused by increasing the length of the line.
i've really got no idea how big the quality loss will be because of this increase, and if anyone could tell me if the difference is appreciable, or if it's hardly noticable, that'd be great
thanks in advance

I had a big extension cord between my filter and modem, (15m I think, though most of it was just coiled under my desk) and it was absolutely fine, I had no problems whatsoever

ethernet is better than usb

ok, thanks for the info :D
i'll go looking for the 15m one tomorrow
i don't want to get it online incase i don't get it in time, so i'm hoping either maplin's or pcworld will have it (i don't like pcworld though, ridiculous prices...)

Posted by: 3rd gen noob

sorry to bump this, but this is the most difficult cable i've ever tried to find.
before i went out shopping for it, i found it on the internet (www.cableuniverse.co.uk), however, i wanted it more quickly than it would be available from the internet

i went out looking today, i couldn't find it at all

i went to Maplin's, PC World, Miller Bros, Curry's, Comet, Dixon's and STS and still didn't find it

therefore i had to resort to buying it on internet :(

just a bit of advice for uk consumers if they're looking for this cable...

If the cable from your modem has a standard BT connector on it, you could have used an ordinary telephone extension cable. The filter is only for phone frequency devices, the adsl side is usually unfiltered.

edit: Alternatively you could have used a short rj11 to BT adapter which are easy to come by, and then used a standard BT extension cable.

no, it doesn't :(
that was one of the problems
another problem was that we have 2 phones on one line, therefore we use a splitter. this covers up the modem port on the filter, so we're using another extension on the filter

this sounds complicated

"if" your usb cable actually plugs in to the modem I would just get alonger usb cable, if not an extension would work. The problem with the long cors is not so muc a problem for you, but the next time that you cannot connect or your connection is slowing down your ISP is gonna blam it on not using the cord they provided to you.

When I was on dsl I had a 50 foot cord, worked fine. When I moved could not get online, tey told me it was the cord - turn out they had not even turned it on. (switched ISP's that day)

Anywasy I would sugest the longer usb cable instead of the line to the jack, just my suggestion.

Posted by: 3rd gen noob

the usb cable is fixed into the modem and i can't change the length of that :(

Posted by: toddiscool

Yeah i figured it would be, you could get an extension but that may be as hard to find as the 15 foot cord, or harder since in most situations they are quite pointless.

Posted by: lynx

Probably not a good idea to get a usb cable of that length anyway, doubly so if the power is from the cable.

Posted by: 3rd gen noob

ok, i've drawn up a really bad little diagram of the planned temporary setup and planned permanent setup

can someone take a look at them and tell me if they're gonna work correctly, please...

http://mysite.freeserve.com/MSchumiFTP/setup.JPG

thanks in advance

Posted by: lynx

Any reason why you don't want to use what you have drawn as 'temp' in a permanent way ? It seems a perfectly reasonable arrangement to me (unless you don't want the phone in the same place as the modem).
That is exactly the setup I have, with the addition of an extra filter for the downstairs phone (where the jack is).

The only thing you've got to watch out for is extension leads made from aluminium cable - adsl does not work over aluminium.

Posted by: 3rd gen noob

the main problem is that there are two phones on the one jack
this would mean that on the temp setup there would have to be another 15m phone extension cable back to the first phone's position (at the jack)

Posted by: Livy

is the other phone located right at the jack, or a litle bit away?

edit: also could u not do the premanent one with a 15m phone extension insted of rj11, or is the plug on the microfilter different to a phone plug. rj11?

within about a metre of the jack

Posted by: Livy

i was gonna say could u get another filter, and a splitter at the jack and put the filter in there, but it would be easyer that way

the filter has got a bt phone port and an rj11 port

Posted by: Livy

oh well, have u found anywhere online to get it, i see it for 6.46, for a 14.2m

This is how to do it.

Posted by: Livy

thats what i was trying to say in my post lynx, but i thought it mighta been to much hassle at the jack end,

edit: and will also require another filter.

thanks for the link
shame i've ordered the other one though
i checked dabs and ebuyer first, but i couldn't find them :(
feel a little silly now... :">

@lynx, that setup seems to be much better...i've got two filters just now anyway (got 2 filters and an alcatel speed touch 330 for £17.50 from Pipex)
i'll go and see if i can get it to work now...thanks

Posted by: Livy

i just searched for rj11, i could find a long enough one on ebuyer though

Posted by: 3rd gen noob

ok, i've set everything up as shown as your diagram lynx
now i just need to wait until broadband comes (wedensday) to see if it'll all work...

thanks a lot for your help, both with the starting advice and also for saving my £20 which would otherwise have been better spent
i just hope the company will give me a refund (either that or i'll be able to cancel the order before it's shipped)

thanks once again and a big :beerchug: for all who helped

Don't necessarily expect the line to be activated first thing on Weds. If you read the blurb, I think it could be any time up to 6pm, I assume it depends on when the engineers get into the exchange, this being a new exchange on broadband.

Good luck with your broadband experience.

Posted by: 3rd gen noob

i think the confirmation email said something about 6 or 6:30 pm being the deadline

also, i've been down to the exchange a couple of times (75m from my house :D) and there's a load of brand new thick black cables on show

i just hope those engineers get their stuff done quickly

Posted by: lynx

And don't forget to cancel your Anytime subscription as soon as you know that broadband is working.

absolutely
not paying them for any more of their 2 hour session limits and cutoffs...

(i assume you got that from my screenshot, or some kind of magical power...:P)

oh, i don't know how much the cancellation fee will be (been with freeserve less than 12 months), but my dad will probably (read hopefully) pay that

Posted by: lynx

There's no cancellation fee with Anytime, you just lose the rest of the month (in your case up to the 17th) (yes, I'm psychic).

that's great news
i was expecting some sort of fee. i notice the Pipex fee is nearly 60 quid
though they're supposed to be good, so hopefully i won't want/need to leave them

oh, one more question...considering your psychic, would it be too much of an ask for this week's lottery numbers...? :P

Posted by: 3rd gen noob

i have adsl

WOOHOO

i'm really happy

:D :D :D

apparently i had to go to the pipex site itself to setup the connection

i could have had it up and running sooner than this, but who cares???

:D

The cancellation fee (£50+vat=£58.75) is BT's connection fee, so it is understandable that they want that back if you cancel the contract within 12 months.

Psychic ? Typo I'm afraid, I meant psychotic.
