Laptop Ethernet Question

My brother just got a new vaio laptop inside the manual there is written
Only connect 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX cables to the Network (Ethernet)
port. Do not connect any other type of network cable or telephone line to this port. COnneciton cables other rhan those listed above may result in an electric current overload and could cause a malfunction, excessive heat, or fire in the port....
What does this mean? Can he connect the ADSL line here?

So what is the cable that comes from the a.d.s.l modem???????????????
i can understand that you cannot put adsl lead straight into ethernet but what if the modem has a rj45 port not u.s.b or both???
surely then you could use the laptop.
which reminds me , i am on a laptop now .........................and i seem to be o.k

If your ADSL modem has ethernet connectors (most do) then, yes you can connect your laptop to the modem.

Just plug it in. If the connectors match then it will work.

Yeah my ADSL works with normal ethernet connectors I just didnt know the term "10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX cables" and I thought before i ruin a brand new laptop i'd rather ask. :D

10Base-T cables are standard Cat5 UTP cables which are designed for bandwidths of up to 10MBit/s.
100Base-TX are the same, but can handle the current standard of 100MBit/s.
There are 1GBit/s Ethernet adapters and cables, but they're still fairly new and therefore expensive.

Well I would have known what a cat5 cable is but they always need to make it complicated. :rolleyes:
