Many people upgrade their computer and i was wondering, what do you do with the old parts? Toss em in the trash? Sell em?
Posted by: Jay
i just trash mine or give them to sombody.

use em to upgrade older machines, or give em to friends, or save em for spares/testing/troubleshooting purposes

Or stuff to try and put together a 2nd or 3rd or 4th computer with. Unless its 486 or back stuff, or broken stuff beyond repair, I keep it, and the boxes, and manuals.

Posted by: Skank

i keep everything and when i have enough junk laying around (here we have a tip that sells old comp parts also that i go to once a week) i put together comps even 486s if that is all i have then i give to the comps to familys that have kids at high school that dont have the money to buy one norm the comps wont go on the net but at aleast have an os and a word proccessor that they can use at home then take a floppy to school to print and more often then not the parents after seeing how helpfull comp can be for their kids save up some money to get a more recent comp and when they do they give me back the old one which i then pass on again

give it to somebody, or donate to an institution.
there's always someone, somewhere, who can make a good use of them.
that also applies to other things, not only old computer parts. i mean, clothes you don't use anymore, and things like that.
:'( :'( :'( such a nice post.

it's true, i've worked for a computer firm that sell components and barebone systems and I was in charge of assembling the systems.
You think I build 200 of my OWN systems? no way
I owned and build 5 computers
and some older components I purchased from my friends (bought them cheap too) and donated finished systems to libraries.
no shit :D

Goes to Goodwill if it's unsaleable. Otherwise the pennysaver (rag sale) for couple bucks.

Didn't your employers mind you selling, giving away, or dumping all their systems?

  Liar, Liar.
On topic. Wait until the parts make a whole, then give the system away.
Over the years i have given away roughly 458 sytems to the homeless.

I find a buyer for my old parts, and then I use that money to go towards new parts.

I usually try to sell the older parts for at least half of what I am paying for my new parts. So far I have been pretty sucessful.

I make the ram a keychain and save all the other parts in case i need them in the future ;)
Posted by: Keikan
I had a ram keychain from really old ram (older than pc-100) but the the holes got bigger and weared off.

So After You Upgraded
I throw the old parts onto the existing pile of computer parts in the corner of my room and when im bored just go through them and see if i can build another pc.
Posted by: adamp2p
Geez, there aren't all of those old parts are sitting around my room. But as I got my first computer almost two years ago, and I gave my last computer to my pop's I really don't have any old parts "just sittin' around."
I gave a math tutor of mine the old geforce mx 420 I had sitting around, as it was, in my opinion, garbage.

I make necklaces out of high quality low latency ram to show off what a hardcore computer nerd I am..jk..
