How long should it take to defrag my harddrive. I have a 80gb hard drive and im using about 18gb of it. my computer specs are athlon 1ghz 80gb hd geforce4 mx 420 and 768mb of ram.

That depends on how long ago was it last defragmented. And what software you use as a defragmenter.

Posted by: titey

It'll depend partially on how long it's been since the last time you did it.... the more often you defrag - generally the less time it will take. http://www.piczonline.com/client/titey/thmbup.gif

My C: drive takes about 15-20 seconds using Diskeeper.

Well I asked cuzz I started Defraging with system mechanice about 4 hours ago and its still not done. The last time I defraged was last monday.

"system mechanic" << this would be your problem. It's making a mess and moving things where they don't belong. Breaking things up into sections instead of keeping everything close together like it's supposed to be.
It takes a while to f**k up a drive this way.

What program would you recommend?

?

Posted by: balamm

I wouldn't. There's no need to mess with things if the system is properly maintained. If there's something that won't defrag, then there are other methods that will work or repairs are needed.

That's a long time. Well I use the defragmenter that comes with Windows. I've had no problems with it. Have you been moving/deleting huge chunks of data frequently?
