SiS 650
Pentium 4 1.6 GHz
LG dvd-rom
5 Different Hard drives ruined
American Megatrend Bios
Windows XP professional edition
Windows XP Home edition
Windows ME Professional edition
WTF?!?!
This computer has destroyed the 5th hard drive. Here is a breifing.
Hard drive 1- (Western Digital) Killed by Counter-Strike (Model ak_47.gpl was modified since the engine start. Please run diagnostic tools for Hardware problems) After that happened I re-activiated Counter-Strike and I connect to the server but my map differs for some reason.... (I DON'T HACK!!)
Hard Drive 2- (Western Digital)Killed by Counter-Strike (Model mp5.mdl was modified since the engine start. Please run dianostic tools for Hard ware problems) After that I re-activated Counter-Strike and I reconnected to the server but my model differs for some reason.
Hard Drive 3- (Western Digital) Same same...
Hard Drive 4- (MaXtor) Contacted some Techie guys but no solution was found. This time it was killed after I defragmented the Hard drive and I restarted the computer. I formatted the Hard drive sucessfully and then I went to install windows again. I installed sucessfully and I went to play Warcraft III after that. Warcraft III froze and the Hard drive died again...
Hard Drive 5- (MaXtor) This time the hard drive died from installing VGA drivers. WTF? After installing VGA driver?!? I went to Windows XP professional to format and reinstall the hard drive but where it says the partition it is replaced by <Setup cannot access this disk.> I click any key and a blue screen pops up, one that doesnt restart the computer. (WTF?!!? A blue screen in Windows XP setup!?!? WTF?!?!) Here is a destricption:
Problem has been detected and windows has been hut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop mesage, disable the driver updates. Try changing video adapters.
Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select safe mode.
Techinical Information:
** Stop: 0X0000008E (0X0000005, 0XF9E41COB, OXF9A46800, 0X000000)
** setupdd.sys - Address F9E41C0B base at F9E19000. Datestamp 3b7d8507
All hard drives couldn't be detected by BIOS or couldn't run the OS. 1 Hard drive was repaired by myself on another computer and is now in use on another computer. The hard drive does not have any problem on that computer. Here is more detail.
Warcraft III- OpenGL mode
Counter-Strike- Software mode
Software installed (ALWAYS)
Windows (XP pro, XP home, and ME pro)
Drivers (Modem, LAN, VGA, etc)
Software installed (NOT always)
Norton Antivirus 2003
PC-Cillin 2000
Norton Systemworks 2003 Professional
Power DVD
ZoneAlarm 3.7 Professional
Norton Internet Securty 2003 Professional
(ALL came bundled with the motherboard, Amazing isn't it?)
Windows Updates are always installed and SP1 is installed after the drivers installation. I am suspecting the idiotic Video card. Since it was killed mostly after highly used amounts of Video card (Counter-Strike, Warcraft III, VGA driver installation) This is the worst computer ever. It can't just be bad luck, the other computers are on fine conditions.
When in Windows ME, the updates were installed and everything seemed fine until... I restarted the computer. After the restart the resolution was extremly low and Windows had a screen saying "Windows Registry is missing, Windows Registry must be rebuilt and the computer must be rebuilt and the computer must be restarted" This keeps popping up so... Dead..
Help me. This is very appreciated.

All Hard drives are dead...
2 are new and 3 are given.
Windows sp1 intergrated was already done on 2 hard drives.

ok look, your hdds are working fine
either your BIOS is not properly configured or you didn't set the master/slave switch on your hdd properly
either that or there is something wrong with your installation of your hdds
it has nothing to do with the stuff you played or installed

BIOS is on factory default settings from the beginning. I am always on the MASTER switch of the jumper. The hard drives can not be read in any other computers.

I tested the HDD on another computer and the Hard drive is invalid. You can't format it or read it. Nothing. Diagnostic tools were run and it's corrupt. CORRUPT I TELL YA!!

Just had a problem with an RMA'd HDD. Thought they sent me a bad one.
I'd been told before my setup on my IDE cables was wrong. But it always worked before. I had as master on the primary IDE my HDD & as slave on the primary IDE I had my CDROM. All alone on the secondary IDE was my CDRW as master.
Now (so far) everything including ghosted HDD are working. On the primary IDE is my HDD as master alone. On the secondary IDE is my CDRW as master & my CDROM as slave. Have used CDROM & CDRW in this config all is good.
What is your primary & secondary IDE setup?

I have 2 IDE cables. I tested both and the harddives still died. 1 IDE made the BIOS detection slower. Right now, I'm such an idiot. I have to plug in the floppy drive.
My new theory is that BIOS is corrupt and I have to flash it. Wish me luck!

Good luck.
Replace the cables. Forget about testing them.
Try the "CS" Cable Select position for the jumpers. Just connect one drive all by itself on the end IDE connector to make it master. Restart your computer and go into the CMOS setup find 'drive detection' and use that.

Actually, Learn350 might have a good point. I'm not sure that you could get a virus stored in your motherboard, or maybe it has corrupted your ram! Everytime you put a new harddrive in it, the virus is still there in the mobo or ram?..?? Seems possible to me. Theres no way that games or whatever is messing up all of your hardrives...no way.

Hmmm, I have also had this blue screen at start up. It happend when I put a PC100 and a PC133 ram stick in there...they were not compatible together. Maybe something isnt compatible? Thats what mine was.

Good idea.I have heard nothing but bad comments on these PCchips boards (formerly PCwave). I suppose you can't expect too much when you pay less than 100 bucks canadian for a board with "everything " integrated (CPU,video card,lan,modem,sound). All in all I'd have to say you have a problem with the board or something other than the drives themselves. I have owned about ten hard drives and have yet to kill one.

hmm you said window crashed ... this is a good sign ;) actually it prove the hard drive is not totaly death ... it can read some information but then what's needed to continue booting is corrupt.
A hard drive can be *death* at many diferent places maybe some sector are corrupt, the MBR (MASTER BOOT RECORD) is corrupt or even critical file system information are corrupt (the File Alocation Table on fat16,32 volume or the equivalent i cant remember the name on NTFS)
if such a thing happen there will be utility to ban those sector on the hardrive surface so no file are written on it ... you migth at the worst lost one GB (that's REALLY A WORST CASE AS EACH SECTOR ARE LIKE 5ko)
the only thing that cannot be corected is actual physical damage to the pin (the little thing that read the HD surface ) or other electric conponment... this is most likely impossible under normal HD condition ...
then came the fact that so much hard drive *died* on this machine .... if you consider that a death hard drive is an hardrive that make window crashes then i'll quote one of my pal msn nick

i had 6 blue screen of death in half an hours trying to install and hp all in one printer under xp :S with alwais usefull error report such as IRCL_NOT_GREATER_OR_EQUAL
My point is there is so much thing that can crash window .... maybee your hardrive were 100% ok but window crashed becauz of a complete deferent reason and when crashing it corrupted your hard drive
Now the real question is do you wish to be helped or you only there to whine ... as long as you stick to your point of my hard drive are death and we cant recover them ... then you wont be able to recover them for sure
Now you might be rigth ... your computer migth be an *HARD DRIVE KILLER* however its very not probable that your hard drive are not recoverable ... try changing your ram and flashing your bios if he's upgradable
NOW from the description of your problem i can see you are more from a gamer than a programer you migth not bother to check your harddrive becauz you dont know about hard drive checker and such
you lucky .. a while ago i discovered the world of data recovery ... or how to pack the most expensive program on a cd
I'go check fro some software that can help you and hopefully provide a direct download link if you wish to cooperate ;)

When your western digital drives died ,did you go to their website and download their different utilities for their drives? There is one they have that will write zero's on the whole drive so as to completely wipe everything on it,not just format it I mean totally remove everything even the boot sector.I had an old western digital drive that had smart technology and when I booted my comp it kept telling me on my statup screen that the drive was going to die.I down loaded that program and ran it and then reinstalled windows and that drive is still running to this day (2 years later).
So basically what people are trying to tell you here is that the drive may not be completely dead there just may be something wrong with it that is making it hard for you to access the data.
Did you try setting them up as slaves in another computer and seeing if you could access them as a slave drive?

POST acts normal
Bios is UPDATED
Harddrive SOMETIMES is detected and somtimes is detected as Å Å Å Å Å Å Å .
Fdisk says "Specified Hard disk can not be opened, No disk or disk is invalid."

ALL is installed by myself.
I jumper according to website and sticker. I connect with IDE cable and I plug in power. I screw on the HDD and on goes the computer. Simple.

Fdisk says "Specified Hard disk can not be opened, No disk or disk is invalid."
dude - that's messed. get new mobo - cheaper than a hd anyway!

If your HDDs are truly dying, i.e will not reformat in another machine. I would suggest your Power Supply is probably up the creek.

i would guess p.s. if the hard drives were clunking - since a bad p.s. would give 2 much and 2 little power to the hd. he hasn't mentioned clunking - but good test 2 use in another puter.

I have a problem with my primary IDE channel on my mobo right now.Here are my symptoms.
1-some times my BIOS does not detect my hard drive
2-sometimes while my BIOS is detecting my hard drive it freezes and displays a bunch of weird characters
3-sometimes the computer crashes
I know this is the problem with mine as the manufacturer has said so and the board will be RMA'd in the next week.
Maybe you have the same problem.There is no way you have gone threw 6 hard drives unless you are either kicking the shit outta your computer or you "REALLY" have no clue what you are doing when working on your computer.

download discwizard 2003 from seagate, its free and will diagnose,re-format, and set up all drives. I repair pcs and this piece of software has accessed so called "dead" hardrives for me on a few occasions. it will even access an ntfs drive put in a fat32(win98 etc) based pc when put in as a slave. you have the option of making floppys to access in dos if req. it wont fix actual "dead" drives but may help you format and get the drive to be seen. also a note on ya mobo> have you installed a separate graphics card or sound card? if so you must disable the onboard built in features otherwise you will get conflicts. update ya bios with the latest version and maybe change ya battery if it quite an old board. do you have any beeps when you boot ie more than 1!? also try setting the mobo's settings to failsafe when installing xp and leave out things like modems and tv cards til it has setup and install them afterwards as these can give you blue screens in setup. hope this helps ;)

@Kiler, if you PM me with your email address, I will send you a little utility which will clear bad partition tables. It restores the first 128 sectors to factory state, which is all you need. You will need a Win98 type boot disk to run it.
If you are coming up with these problems every time you try to install XP, could I suggest you may have a faulty XP disk. It is not unknown for dodgy sources to infect these disks, or simply have bad areas.

Xp cd is perfect. I installed the copy on all my other computers. BTW, remember I tried ME, and XP home. I will PM you my email. Get back to me ASAP.

Format those dead Maxtor drives; I would recommend the low level format utility from Maxtor's website, something like 40 kb. It might work with Western Digital drives, never tried it. Maxtor also provides a diagnostic utility. If the low level utility can't complete the wipe, then I don't know what to tell you, but it does need to format the entire drive. There is an existing debug script to clear hd partition tables. I guess that's only good for DOS-windows though, probably not what you need. There is definetly a solution to your problems. If all else fails.... get a new mobo and stuff.. somethins zapp"in them.....then try to get the drives back.

Kiler, I went back and read your first post, then jumped to the post with more specifics listed. When the problem originated, SMART would have reported any hd errors. If there was no SMART message, then it's safe to say the problem is somewhere on your motherboard or video card; firmware. The bios is confusing the os, cmos is conflicting the hd, video cmos is contradicting bios settings, etc. There's no way for me or anybody at this forum to know for sure what's going on with it.
The software I suggested can be found from the hd oem websites. LLF utility for a Maxtor drive, Maxtor's website. I think Western Digital has their own utilities but I'm not sure because I have Quantum(Maxtor utilites work for certain Quantums). I definitely wouldn't spend any more money on hd's, I would be finding deals on a motherboard. I would also try another os besides xp or me-2000, or different copies of the same os's. I have 98, linux, and freebsd. They all have one thing in common, operating systems designed to process fundamental tasks without any point-click gui.
Lot's of variables, lot's of choices, so good luck with it.

Sure, I'm going to waste my time sending you a utility that doesn't work.
It works for me, it works for other people I've sent it to, but you can't figure out how to use it, so it doesn't work. Which do you think is faulty, the utility or you?

Ok, I copied the program to my start-up disk and i boot from it.
It loads all the things and finally lets me type.
I type zap 1. and then y. It says Zap complete and I restart the computer and then nothing happens.

Well, if it is your primary master you should be typing "zap 0". Which is what I told you. But if it is your primary slave, and it is not giving you an error message, then your drive is not dead, and the utility is working.
It merely sets it back to factory default state. You can then start partitioning and formatting it.
Did you expect it would have somehow installed XP in 2 seconds?
