why do we have to use different programs to rip music, why can't we just put the cd in the drive and say copy music to harddrive? It works for me

Better ripping software has better quality and rips much faster.

+ You can choose between CBR [192 kb or higher] & VBR, and if you use the right settings it does al the tagging at the same time.

the sound isn't any better on .ogg than it is with a properly ripped mp3 (VBR ~192 Lame+EAC), but the file-sizes
are usually smaller for the same quality.
There are so many formats now...ogg,mp3,mpc,ape, etc....
Honestly, though many are good, anyone encoding in anything other than mp3 is just wasting their time, IMO.
That is, if you're encoding the files to be shared.
