Need For Speed 5 Problems

I had a copy of need for speed 5 that I downloaded from Kazaa, it worked ok but would keep freezing up on me. I deleted that game and downloaded it from another link, but now it doesn't work. I keep getting a message that I do not have directx 7, I downloaded directx 9 but that doesn't seem to work. What do I have to do to get this game working on my computer?
