Do you have a static IP. As I understand it for dial-up there is a new IP allocated each time you connect. I think for some permanent connections there is a static IP. However I'm not keen on that for a variety of reasons. Some cable companies change your IP regularly, every 12 or 24 hours in some cases. It may be worth you finding out which your company does.

i am on broadband and my ip changes every time i reconnect
so basically if someone i dont want knows my ip adress i could just disconnect and reconnect and i have a difewrent one

Exactly.

It may also change on a regular basis.

Either way your IP doesn't have to be known by anyone for very long.

Asuming you are using a decent firewall, which you should be if you have a broadband connection, then that will not let anything into or out of your machine unless you allow it. So anyone knowing your IP address should not be able to access your system unless you allow it.

If you want to check your systems security you could go to

http://grc.com/intro.htm

and run the various tests. There are also utilities there which you may find usefull.

If you are concerned about the authorities tracing you through your IP at a given time, as opposed to hacking your computer and identifying you, then there's not a lot you can do about it. They could approach the ISP give them the IP and time and ask them to identify who was using it. No doubt they would be able to do that, though whether they would provide the details is another story. That very much depends on where you are, where your ISP is and where the authorities are i.e. it will depend on the legal position with regard to accessing your personal details.

For example in the UK the Data Protection Act and the European Convention on Human Rights would possibly stop your ISP from divulging the infomation without a Court Order. I really don't know I'm just guessing however I think it is unlikely that anyone would go to that extent unless you were commercially providing the files you were downloading.

If you are really worried about it then don't use any programs which identify your IP to other users. It's really just a matter of keeping things in proportion.

Have you used

File:neo ip tracer 3.25 pro (full).exe (sig2dat:///|File:neo ip tracer 3.25 pro (full).exe|Length:1878731 Bytes,1835KB|UUHash:=Ytca2OTNmd00QRejF/mpr25RrfE=|)
Length:1878731 Bytes,1835KB
UUHash:=Ytca2OTNmd00QRejF/mpr25RrfE=

have a play with this. You might like it.

In emule there is an option to allow people to view your shared files. Its set to "no one" by default.

Even if you have a dynamic IP address it doesnt make a difference, your ISP logs everything so all the RIAA would have to do is give your ISP the exact time you were connected with that IP address.

As far as getting your details is concerned it depends on the Data protection laws (or lack of them) in your country.

I might be wrong here but....

I also have a cable internet connection and I have one IP address.

I think on a 56k dial up, you get different IP addresses. On cable you get one.

There are servers on emule where they only use dynamic IP addresses. The only good thing about that is that the same IP address will not be logged everytime. I haven't heard of them going after someone who downloads a few files or at least appears to.

Evil
Even if you set it to where no one can view your files they can still download from you if you have anything in your shared folder and if you are downloading anything then you are sharing. People can download the part files from your shared folder.

Yanks

It depends on your supplier. I know that in the UK both NTL and Telewest change IP addresses allocated to users. They do it at least once a day. You also get a new one if you re-boot the cable modem. I think static addressing is more common in the US. Varying the IP address is a more secure way. However it is not really suitable for anyone who is hosting their own web page.

Personally I have a software firewall and a hardware firewall, as part of the router. However as discussed earlier the autrhorities are more likely to approach your ISP to get details, rather than hack into individuals computers. Either way they will probably need some sort of court order. There are still civil liberties in most countries. Like I said earlier I´m only guessing, but I think they would only go to that sort of bother if you were commercially producing the stuff.

That used to be true here in the US, but more and more broadband suppliers are using dynamic ip's now...
Right now, there's probly more that do than those that don't give ya a dynamic ip..

That's a good thing.
