Ws_ftp Upload
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)Posted by: Amarjit
When I upload some gifs to either of the following servers via FTP:
hostultra.com
web1000.com
I am unable to upload a few GIF files because they're 'invalid gif files'. Ihave also tried uploading via HTTP, but the same result occurs.
What shall I do?
P.S. I am using Ipswitch WS_FTP 1.7.1.

that is really weird. When does it say that after uploading or while uploading?
Does ws_ftp say the gif 's are bad? That'd be even weirder.
Are your gif's interlaced or animated?
Can you upload anything else to those servers?

Actually, responds by not uploading them at all. I only realised the fault until I tried HTTP upload via the website.

but can you upload anything else then that? A plain text file for instance?

Interesting. I guess go back first and make sure that the files are named correctly, that the file extension is proper. Then try to upload something else to make sure you are properly connected.
I have the same exact FTP you have, Ipswitch WS_FTP Pro 1.7.1 and I never encountered a warning like that before. Let us know what's going on, I'm curious now.

Good point, make shure that there are no spaces in the file name. And that the extensions are lower-case

The latest version of WS FTP Pro is 7.62, dunno where y'all are getting 1.7.1 at, I've never even seen that version and I've been using ws ftp for proby 5 yrs or so...
The only time i've had ws ftp report any errors while uploading is when the filename has spaces in it, can't have them in files to upload... After there uploaded you can put the spaces back though, if you want them in the file name..

Sorry, I meant 7.6.1.
I can upload text files sucessfully. Also, an error log appears in the root of the remote directory. I think the GIFs are invalid because for one they were BMPs renamed from xxxxx.bmp to xxxxx.gif
However, it still appears as a GIF extension.

Also, a point I forgot to include was that the filenames do not contain spaces. They are xxxxx_xxxx.gif They contain underscores, which is perfectly acceptable.

Did you rename the file? Or did you resave it. Only renaming is a bad a idea, the file size is much bigger then a
.gif would be, and prob not very "watchable" . Actually it IS a bad .gif, if you just rename it.
RE-saving would be better, open as bmp, and then resave as .gif
Gif's and Jpg's should be sent as binary file with ws_ftp, but you said you also tried http ulpoad wich is not working
for the gif's, but no problems with the .txt file, right?
So I'd check the gif first.

You can't just rename the extension and except the file to be magically converted from .bmp to .gif!!!
Of course the file appears to be gif. You changed the extension. If you change it to .avi it will look like an .avi file but won't behave as one.
Use a graphics program like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, open the .bmp file and then save as .gif (you'll have to decrease the colors used, to 256). ;)

On a side note, I had noticed in a previous thread that we had the same version of WS_FTP Pro, so I jsut looked at what you said and copied it. Oops.
Yeah if you re-arranged a .bmp into a .gif, or even worse just renamed it, you will undoubtedly have run into problems.
Then again, graphics is NOT my strong point here, and I think the last couple guys said everything you need to know, but again let us know how it works out.

Yep, that's exactly what I did. I renamed the file from GIF to BITMAP. Anyway, http://www.kazaaliter.u2i.org now uses BMPs so there's no problems now, only that the website loads slightly slower. Thanks.
