Should I Buy "centrino"?

I want to buy a laptop computer but i'm not sure what kind, maybe you can help.
-"Centrino" is it any good?
-What is better "Pentium 1.6 Centrino 1M" or "Pentium 4 2.4"?

Centrino is slower, but its designed for laptops so it should have a much lower power consumption - i think that's the basics

I think it weighs less also.

admittedly, I dont' know much about laptops, but I don't think the weight of the CPU is going to differ much, or be noticably
heavier if it does.

^ Damn straight man! My friend's laptop got SO hot. Go with the 2.4...even though I don't like laptops.

Centrino is not a type of CPU, it is a set of technologies in the motherboard chipset designed for laptops. It uses less electricity and is lighter - I'm not sure about how it affects performance. I think Centrino laptops tend to have wireless networking capabilities.
If you've got plenty of cash, it might be worth going Centrino with your laptop, but if you don't have a wad of cash to splash out on a laptop, go with something cheaper.

i bought both a p42.4 and a centrino 1.6. lamsey is right, most centrino's come w/wireless networking built right in.
the dell centrino we have seems faster than the gateway p4, and the dell is about 2lbs lighter as well.
oh yeah, we use mathlab on em 2! :D

Yep. It's' a marketing ploy to make you think it's something special, when in reality, the chipset is based on standard protocols(e.g. 80211b/g wireless) and their performance.
No biggie, you'll get the same performance out of any laptop[with similar hardware].

The centrino's have the pentium "m," an entirely different microprocessor architechture! As well as the wireles standard...
they have 1 MB L2 cache as opposed to the P4's 512 Kb

centrino is what you will want to get if you are going to get a labtop for wireless uses... I have heard only good things about them, they are great for ewhat you are talking about, a bit more expensive, but you get much longer roaming time with the labtop, My mom has one at her IT job, and she is pleased, i got on it, and it runs all the buisness apps really well...

that is exaxtly right. It is basically another way intel can bundel a bunch of its hardware and make more money. The important thing is the pentium 4 M because it is very fast and very good battery performance.

u r correct - but i think they've updated it 2 802.11g, since i just purchased a dell that came with the g standard.
i friggin love wireless - and soon it will b faster than wired.

wireless will probably never be faster than wires, i mean u have gigabit network cards at the moment, and the g standard is only 54mbs i think.
and u also have fiberoptics etc, which will be alot fatser, and also connections isps use.

if your getting just for the wireless networking then buy a card. you shouldnt spend an extra 400$ just to go on the internet and have a slow processor

Centrino's are not slow, you're not going to miss out on any noticable speed differences unless you're rendering, or something heavy of that sort. I will restate some facts that have already been pointed out but clarification is nice, no?
Centrino's ARE the package of the Intel Motherboard, with the Pentium M processor, and an integrated wireless card -- I haven't seen G's in systems but I know there is atleast B. Adam is also right with their L2 cache as it has increased to a meg. The advertised 1.4-1.6gHz of Centrino notebooks can be multiplied by either 1.7 or 1.9 to get what they really feel like. A 1.4gHz will be alot faster than some 1.4gHz computer you have sitting at home someplace.
And yes the battery life is MUCH longer than on a P4 or the P4-M. The processor uses less voltage and most Centrino's I see advertised are 4+ hours. Not bad at all.
