as you may or may not know, XP limits a certain amount of bandwidth , which may or may not be limited on your machine..... but it's worth checking anyway. Here's how to check.....
1. go to RUN on the start menu
2. type in GPEDIT.MSC
3. it brings up a window with a list of settings on the left hand side... double click ADMINISTRIVE TEMPLATES and this brings up a list on the right... now click on NETWORK and then QoS PACKET SCHEDULER then finally click on LIMIT RESERVEABLE BANDWIDTH which brings up a box which tells you whether XP is limiting any bandwidth for itself...... Phew :D :D :D

So, do you have a method of correcting it or are you just showing us this to make us know how bad XP is screwing us? I am not at home at the moment so maybe it is simple, however if you have a way of reclaiming the bandwidth please share it, thanks for the tip either way.

Posted by: al_birkett

:D the method shown shows you whether or not XP is reserving any bandwidth and allows you to stop it from reserving bandwidth if it is :D

NOTE:That tip donīt work for XP Home,it works for XP Pro.

what is it with you people u take things 2 seriously.... jus tryin to give a tip, won't bother next time

Posted by: vivitron 15

cool, thanks for this...my PC says not configured. presumably that's what it should be. is it poss to designate bandwidth to different ports/progs through this? i.e. let K++ have half my dload and leave the rest for surfin?

Posted by: mikharris

thats a bit of an urban legend that one xp only uses that when it is called for and it never is.
nothing hogs bandwidth apart from spyware and auto updates turn them all off in services the updates that is
i do nothing to mine except that and i get 560kbps all day every day on a 600kbps cable modem the other 40kbps is reservered for your provider for some reason only it knows. same thing with speed ups bah phooey i`ve tried them all load of crap the lot of them a good defrag and a little reg hacking is all you need, stop useless programs running in the background like that ram defragger junk you`ve all got runnig if you need more ram buy some if you need a faster connection buy a faster modem if you need a faster pc buy one

i am really interest in his tip. Is it that I put 100% in the box or 0% because the internet goes faster when it says 100%.

Posted by: Phil_123

the 20% QoS Schedler DOES NOT affect bandwidth if you don't use QoS

Posted by: TweakOC

Well I am hock up to a router and Im thinking that it uses that...

Posted by: starstorm73

does anyone know if this tip is possible to use with win xp home?
maybe a patch from microsoft for this "GPEDIT.MSC" file or something???

Posted by: imported_computerfreak76

no starstorm this is a feature for windows xp pro ONLY

Posted by: mike kkm

is the internet more faster after you change this.

sorry about that it increases your speed ONLY if your internet connection uses the QOS.

Mine says not configured.....is this right??

You can also download this little tool to free up bandwidth

http://www.xp-antispy.de/

Click on the flag for the english version

Also has a lot of other great stuff :D

Posted by: Yusuke

Somebody already said this, but nobody seemed to pay attention...

The QoS Stuff isn't used by normal, home users (in otherwords, it should never get started under normal circumstances, so it'll never limit anybodies bandwidth)

KaZaA Ultimate Traffic Hack
1. Set maximum number of simultaneous downloads to 2147483647
2. Set maximum number of simultaneous uploads to 2147483647
3. Set maximum number of search results to 2147483647
4. Set maximum bandwidth in kilobits to be used for transferring files to other
Kazaa members to 2147483647
5. Set the above settings to normal numbers so that you can change settings

duz this actually work?

Actually, no. It really doesn't affect anything so it wouldn't work. Besides, the settings in K++ (of all versions) is just fine. No need to worry. :)

thank you for your tip, tips are always welcomed. Those who have no use for the tips people give, keep your opinions to yourselves... and thank others for sharing.

You can't split your bandwidth into so many parts (you can't have half a bit) -- EACH ip packet has a MINIMUM size... about 40 bytes I think. If you tell your connection to send too many ip packets at once (too many uploads/downloads/etc), then your connection will be using MOST/ALL of its bandwidth sending ip packets containing only a couple bytes of data each and 40 bytes of overhead.

So these numbers aren't just 'unoptimized' -- they're BAD for the entire network!

The best speeds are achieved by setting the number of uploads pretty low -- only about 1-5, maybe a LITTLE higher (like 3-10) if you're on a T-1 line.

Set maximum bandwidth in kilobits to be used for transferring files to other Kazaa members to what your connection can SUSTAIN -- you can even use any whole-number values if you hack the registry and/or create a *.reg file to change it. I have a cablemodem and a 1.5Mbps down/256Kbps up line -- so I share at speeds between 200 and 240Kbps. Any faster and my connection starts getting very unstable and greater packet loss.
