Computer Wont Start Pt 2
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)Posted by: Infested Cats
Ok, so I ordered all these new parts for my computer... motherboard, processor, video card, blah blah blah.
I get everything all hooked up, and then computer wont start... i mean, the bios will come up, the but OS wont start at all.
What I did was put my original hd into the new motherboard... but now it wont work...
I have a bootable copy of WinXP SP 1, but the darn thing wont boot for the first time ever. I think the PC refuses to read it or something.

There are settings in the BIOS as to the bootup sequence. Change it so that the CDrom drive is set to boot before the hard drive.

Tried that... it refuses to read the CDRom..

What motherboard is it?
Is your CDrom drive connected by itself on an IDE channel? Are the jumpers set as Master?

Everything's in place.
the MB is an ASUS A7N8X-X

turn off all the advanced options in the bios, it may have failsafe settings select those. if it wont let you boot from cdrom download the xp bootdiscs from MICROSOFT (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=83F53BE9-28FA-40E8-8EC2-631504EF5E26) and boot from them. i would also take out anything non essential ie modem, sound card, network card etc as these can cause trouble with setup in xp. once you do get it to boot use the repair option(not using recovery console) it will rewrite the windows installation but you will have to download the updates again. after it boots you can put all the other stuff back in and enable the advanced features. ;)

i disabled all the advanced features, and i get this:
boot from CD:
boot from CD:
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
mind you... this cd used to boot!

Try using the windows XP floppy boot disks.
Oh yeah before getting the disks try booting from cd again and keep tapping a key

i tried the XP disks, and it says "missing operating system"

hmm so it is trying to read from the cd  .. does the bios list your hard drive and cdrom drives ok? have you got the drives plugged into the right sockets? hard drive in ide0 and cdroms in ide1? also try unplugging the slave cdrom. have just the bare essentials connected, it could also be a memory issue, have you got two sticks installed? try booting with just one of them in there, may sound odd but ive had it in the past and it took me hours to find it!

Check your hard drive jumpers again, im telling ya.
I had a similar message today when I booted up, but that was after I inseted my backup hard drive to swap files.
Turns out, I had the main Hard Drive set to slave, so it wasnt reading my old one, and wasnt booting off my main one.
Oh, and make sure you dont have the ol floppy disc in.

yeh could be as simple as jumpers not set correctly or boot order, I had a call out couple of weeks ago where someone had upgraded a pc and the boot order was set to 1 floppy 2 ide1 3 cdrom and there was no ide 1(that would have been the slave if fitted), it should have been ide 0. if there is an option to try other boot devices enable that to for now ;)

IDE1 would not be the slave, it would be the primary device on the secondary IDE channel.

@ Infested Cats: in your BIOS do you have a setting for Boot other device? If you have make sure it's enabled otherwise the puter won't try to boot from the next device in the sequence after failing to boot from the CDROM.
I always leave my boot sequence as Floppy-CDROM-IDE0 with Boot other devices enabled.
Won't help you boot the CD but it looks like this is why the boot diskettes aren't working for you.

in most cases yes but not all. on the system i worked on the boot order choices were ide 0,1 cdrom 1,2 zip, floppy, network etc, others ive worked on have been ide 0,1,2,3 etc where cdroms were 3 and 4. mine just lists the devices detected and you choose the order ie floppy, ibm deskstar, atapi cdrw etc etc. all bios setups vary. :P
edit...i will add i have been trying to access the asus site to look at the manual but i think the server is down in tiawan, will try later ;)
