when a downloaded file (autoroute)has an icon similar to a batch file icon how does one install the program??

Erm...click it ? :P If it doesn't run, try opening it with WinZip or Pover Archiver and with one of these programs try to extract the file (it can be an archive), if it doesn't work and you think that it's a .zip, .rar, .bh or any other archive file try fixing the file with one of the mentioned programs. If it is still not running it may be that the file is corupted.

Most probably a corrupt file, happened to me several times.
