I've being getting a lot of popup ads when I've being using MSN Messenger. Final sorted it out so if your having the same problem this is what you do, oh this is for XP by the way.

Right click on 'My Computer' icon on the desktop and select 'Manage'. In the 'Computer Management' window, click on the “+” sign to the left of 'Services And Applications'. In the tree that opens up, click on 'Services' scroll down the Services menu, locate 'Messenger', right click and select 'Properties'. In 'Startup Type', choose 'Disabled' in 'Service Status', click on 'Stop' Then click on 'Apply' then on 'OK' to close, then close the 'Computer Management' window.

MSN Messenger sucks, just don't use it at all. Uninstall that shit. :D

Posted by: Rocko

@Leech_Killer
That service isn't part of MSN Messenger is part of the OS. You have it installed even if you don't have MSN messenger (only on WinNT/2k/XP).

I disagree, Ive used msn for years now and It keeps me & family & freinds in touch. I dont find anything wrong with it. Why do you think so anyway?

Posted by: PcH

I believe that MSN Messenger is a lot better than AIM. AIM is more popular because so many people use it. <_<

Posted by: Curley

I've been using messenger for the bast 2 years now and i've never had any problems with it. Never heard of aim though

I mean the program itself sucks, nothing wrong with the network. I use Trillian (http://www.trillian.cc) to connect to MSN (and keep in touch with family, friends etc.). Trillian can also connect to AIM (and ICQ, IRC and Yahoo).

Posted by: Gambo

The only problem with Messenger I found was that when downloading or uploading files on a 56k connection, you would keep getting disconnected. I had to keep stopping uploads or downloads everytime a mate came online. Now I use ICQ, no probs :D

Posted by: pw3n

I disabled that 'windows messenger' thing a while ago, im not sure if it has much to do with the actual MSN messanger..

It was making message box popups that instantly crashed some online game I was on, and the topic came up on the gaming forum and we all disabled it..

In (Run > "msconfig")
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/m.martindell1/msn1.jpg
Edit: Unchecking this 'Messenger' service doesnt have any impact on the 'MSN messenger' program.. it simply stops the pop-ups :)

Tho there is one thing that comes with MSN Messenger you should certainly kill..

Read this: http://www.infopackets.com/freenewsarticle.../loadqm.exe.htm (http://www.infopackets.com/freenewsarticles/loadqm.exe.htm)

In (Run > "msconfig")
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/m.martindell1/msn2.jpg

Removing both did no harm to my system :)

Posted by: summerlinda

I use MSN Messenger over 3 years now, and never ever had any problem with it. Your pop-ups have nothing to do with MSN Messenger.
AIM is not much used overhere, and ICQ sucks big time. :D

Posted by: Benno

The popups come from an integrated messenger service which is for messages in a lan. Somehow companies can use this for advertisement. As long as you dont work in a network and use the service you can disable without problems. :P

Posted by: pw3n

start > run > "net send 127.0.0.1 hi"

If that works you have the messenger program installed :)

We used to use it to send messages at my college across the network using 'net send MAT001 hey stop looking at pr0n' and stuff.. I even wrote a program to spam people with messages for mischief purposes :)

Posted by: Sid

MSN messenger sucks because it starts every time you open outlook, it doesnt come with an uninstall option, and when you try to shut it off it says other applications are using it and it wont close. Fuck MSN use Gaim or Trillian.

It don't with me

I can set it to open automatically with windows if I choose, but it never opens with outlook when I go in to check my emails

Posted by: Sid

Really? It did for me till i removed it. Are you running XP?

Posted by: Curley

Yeah, XP home. Used to have '98 but I can't remember what happened then

You problem is 56k.

Posted by: Chilly

Nothing wrong with MSN messenger

Have used it for years and years, user friendly for the family and friends.

Nothing complicated. ;)

Posted by: pw3n

hehe I couldn't find it :( same effect tho by making a .bat file with the net send line in tons of times.. all my program did was have a target box, number to send, message, then used a rich text box to copy ("net send" & target box & message) as many times as they asked.. save the file as a .bat file.. run it.. and delete it :)

I havent tried it over the net using an IP adress tho, I guess the people who sent you pop-ups just use a program to make 4 random numbers for an IP adress and send over and over.. that could be fun to write but i'd probably get in trouble

Posted by: starstorm73

so let me get this straight....can you send this to ANY ip? or just the ip's that are on your lan???

Posted by: pw3n

No Idea.. I wanted to test it but only one friend on ICQ and he's got his messenger disabled and too lazy to turn it on..

I dont know if straight writing "net send bla.bla.bla.bla" will do it, but there must be a way to do it as I was getting pop-ups before randomly every few hours <_<

Posted by: starstorm73

well i tested it on my girlfriend and it didnt work, i assume this was because she doesnt have xp/win2k tho :P , give me some time on this one, ill post back as soon as i get it working

Get Msn Messenger Plus...search for it in google or in andr.net

Posted by: TIDE-HSV

I can't believe anyone wants it. I'm just two weeks into XP, and I'm still trying to figure out how to kill it. I've even gone into the Registry, but it just repairs whatever damage I do and pops back up. Who said something about "whack a mole?" Or is that just with Mexican food?

Posted by: Sid

and I'm still trying to figure out how to kill it
Do you mean MSN messenger or the messenger service, they are totally different things. If you mean MSN messenger go to start>run then type this RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

@chilly I dont like user friendly. The more user friendly an app is the less powerfull it is.

Posted by: nykobing

He does not need to remove MSN Messenger there is nothing wrong. Like other people said he is having trouble with the net send command. This is how you deal with it the right way (other way someone posted here was totally wrong).

#1 Go into control panels and open the Administrative tools.

#2 Select services - that will open up.

#3 Go down to Messenger (this in not MSN messenger) - right click it and stop the service. It will say disabled. Close the control panel and the popups will stop.

Hope that helps.

Posted by: Sir_Loki

To stop MSN Messenger from popping up with Outlook (and other shit like hotmail.com) rename the executable to msmsgs.exe.bak (or anything but msmsgs.exe) or remove the whole program.

If it says it can't close because other services are running (Outlook, hotmail etc) you can still close the program by finding it's process in the task manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL), msmsgs.exe, and click End Process.

actually ive had msg plus for awhile now, basically ever since the new version came out :) , check out mess.be (http://www.mess.be) for tons of addons/cracks and such for msn hehe c ya

Posted by: Curley

I use messenger plus, the good thing is that it logs all you conversations. Which you may need to prove someone wrong about something they said.

Posted by: TIDE-HSV

Thanks, Sid. That one worked. None of the others do. This is a "fresh off the press" version of XP, with SP1, and it won't let one uninstall, rename, etc. Sure, you can Task Master it, but, if you have to reboot (something I'm doing a lot of, adding a new disk, new OS, etc.) then you will show on anybody's screen, who has you on their "buddy" list, as having just logged on - whether you want them to know it or not. Sid's idea killed it for good.

Posted by: kazzalitesucks

just download xp antispy and it turns all the options off for you which you dont need
msn messaging service, and also disables msn from outlook and autostart functions
easy to use and you dont need to go searching all over windows to find these options
xp antispy (http://www.xpantispy.de/)

My msn messenger keeps crashing to im using the newest version and i have Windows me?
whats wrong with it?
And does msn messenger keeps logs of what u have typed?
If so where are they?
and how do u delete them?

Thanks.

Posted by: Sir_Loki

MSN Messenger doesn't log anything. Use Trillian!

WinME sucks, that's your problem. Use win2k or winXP, or stick to win98 if you have a slow computer.

you can stop msn from connecting when u open outlook goto the options and (if u have the sp1 update) un check the "automaticlly sign in to messenger" that will stop it from con. when u open outlook. :D

Posted by: SideSwiped

If the problem is with messenger popups, there is a program free at download.com that will block any and all messenger popups.

And as for you screwballs that vouch for Trillian.............yeah, trillian is okay if you don't have over 200 previously blocked and deleted ppl on your IM plus the 120 you currently have, it's a royal pain in the arse to go thru EVERY SINGLE address and say yes or no to them being able to see you online. It doesn't even offer the screen name to help you out, just gives you their addy.

Posted by: Sir_Loki

I'm no screwball

Net send only works in Win2000 or WinXP.

i don't think that messenger is the samething as msn messenger. but if it worked for u, that's great...

I use MSN, its perfect.

Thres nothing wrong with it at all. It can be removed, it can be taken off start up, it can be switched off, and it can be setup not to start with outlook.

Some of the above posts just show the ignorance people have for Microsoft programs.

Posted by: mobboss01

Nothing is wrong with MSN and I don't get pop-ups. I guess I am just lucky. However, Trillian Pro rules. Gotta love the skins it comes with and the ability to dl more of them.
