search through the forum, if you didn't know, I assume the only complaint you have is having to watch them on your PC??

You will have a hard time finding MPG videos primarily due to there larger size(not very file swapping friendly). AVI movies are compressed, therefore smaller. Yes, there is quite the difference in video quality. In fact, MPEG-2 videos are of DVD quality where as MPEG-1 are of VHS quality.
If you want the highest quality videos try looking for DIVX encoded ones.
Divx encoding does create large files though. Expect 7-800MB for a typical movie. (larger file size=more information=better quality)
FYI:A typical DVD movie is 6-8 GB.
You can type "DIVX" into the Kazaa search engine and find plenty to pick from. You will need the DIVX codec for playback.
I don't recommend doing this if you have a dial-up connection. It would take far to long.
Sadly, most new movie bootlegs are of the AVI variety unless ripped from a prerelease DVD or VHS tape(like the ones given to movie critics).
p.s. converting an AVI to an MPG does not create a better quallity video. you cannot make something from nothing. compression takes away information from the source in order to achieve the smaller size.

I've tried converting AVIs to MPEG using TEMPEnc but on XviD downloads, i get an annoying error message :(

For TMPGEnc to work with XviD, you need to change a couple of options. This (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=119019&highlight=synch+divx) page will tell you what to change.
Just remember to change them back when you want to convert DivX again.

I know the perfect place too get mpeg movies. Off my pc.. I convert every movie I come across. Why.. Cause I can make a nice chunk of change on the side. Also it gives me something too do.
If they would make a dvd player that reads avi format. Then I think we all would have it alot easier. Having the option too add codecs too a harddrive built in for the system. I'm sure it could easly sale more then the regular dvd players.
