The Ultimate Guide to .rar, .r01, and .001 files
OK, so you downloaded a game or a movie and all you got are a bunch of files with any of the extensions above? Here's what you have to do:
1. Goto RarLabs (http://www.rarlabs.com) or RarSoft (http://www.rarsoft.com) and grab WinRAR, a file-compressing utility. If you've heard of WinZip, this is practically the same but with better compression ratio and a different format (RAR).
2. Install WinRAR with SHELL support
3. Right click the first file you have in the folder (either if its a .rar, a .r01, or a .001) and click "Extract to <name-of-the-file>\". If .001 files dont have this option in its right-click menu, double-click the file and then "Select a program from a list". If WinRAR isnt on that list already, click browse and go to C:\Program Files\WinRAR (or wherever you installed it) and select WinRAR. After that, Extract the files to a new folder.
4. After this, the new folder would hold either the bin/cue or the iso or the movies. If its a bin/cue or iso, you should burn it with Nero or mount it with Alcohol 120%/Daemon Tools. Check the pinned topics for that.
NOTE: If you want to check the integrity of all the downloaded files, and with the bunch of files there is a .sfv file, grab yourself QuickSFV (http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Mouse/4668/), a utility that helps you check that every file you downloaded isn't corrupt.

if you get a tar file you need to open it with winrar to extract the rar files
then you need to open the rar files with winrar to extract the file

Makes sense, there are a lot in here. The Bittorrent section would be the wrong place I suppose, but that does seem to be where all the .001 questions come up.

just extract your first file (.001 or .000) and itll extract the rest automatically :)

yeah there are a lot. I rember when there were only 2-3 pins at the most per a topic and they were mostly FAQ ones.

i used winzip at first (i think from like version 2 or 3....cant remember), but then i switched to winrar and never came back. WinRar is by far the best program for this matters.... its fast, reliable, and can use the .rar format to compress better than .zip, not to mention its support for a lot of formats (including .tar, .ace, even .iso)

Just one more question.
I DL a file which has 4 disks... and I was told to extract all 4 disks (which I did and then becomes a bin. file.) But then was told to burn it on to one DVD disk...
How do I do that?

I downloaded truecrimes which was 4 disks and became 4 bin and cues (had to add the file extensions)
and Lord of the rings return of the king (can be found on suprnova under PS2 games) which was 3 disks, when extracted 3 bin and cues (didnt need to add extension name)

Also what what you recommend as the best burning software?
I have nero 6.3.2 now..... but then I will need CDRWIN touse when I want to mount images... what do you think of Achol 120%?

I just installed Alcohol 120% 1.4.8 and I dont know how to mount....

Oh you won't let it go - I've used it for 3 years or something and never liked something else (and I did try the other software).

No nag screen at startup, the same as WinRAR.
However, I consider winzip's screen more naggy than winrar's :rolleyes:
