This post was not only meant to shut up those people who say you can't share with Linux, ergo it sucks, but to show newcomers to Linux what choices they have. :)

nice list.

there is also shadows experimental (http://bt.degreez.net/) bittorent clinet.

the standard BT client also comes as source so any linux distro can use it as long as you have the python interpreter installed.

must try that mldonkey that look like a good one.

Posted by: h1

Haven't used MLdonkey yet... still stuck on Nicotine. :P

You forgot azureus, the best bittorent client for linux and you dont need to install the original bittorent to run the azureus client.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/azureus/

GiFT is no longer able to connect to fast track networks, so its pretty much of no use.

GTk-Gnutella--
works fine but it can not run as root which is a security risk anyway. Although people still seem to complain about not being able to run it as root. I dont see a problem with it, but to tell someone what they can and can not do on their own box is rediculous. If idiots want to run it as root they still should be able to, but gtk-gnutella wont let you. I kinda think that sucks.

I found out that the free overnet core http://www.edonkey2000.com/downloads.php with this gui http://ed2k-gtk-gui.sourceforge.net/index.shtml is the best way to go if you want to be up and sharing files in no time . That along with azureus are the two most easiest filesharing apps to install in linux.

For the ed2k-gtk-gui all you need is gtk which most people have anyway, and for azureus all you need is java.

People have problems installing nicotine because silly dependencies so I think their project has a long way to go in means of development.

Thanks haxor :)

:P I know, WTF was I thinking not putting Azerus in there. :ninja:

Nice job haxor

I have been trying to get nicotine to work for months now... :(

It wont detect my new pygtk!

Nicotine supports "psyco", an inline optimizer for python
code, you can get it at http://sourceforge.net/projects/psyco/
Can not find required PyGTK. The current search path is
['/usr/local/bin', '/usr/local/lib/python23.zip', '/usr/local/lib/python2.3', '/usr/local/lib/python2.3/plat-linux2', '/usr/local/lib/python2.3/lib-tk', '/usr/local/lib/python2.3/lib-dynload', '/usr/local/lib/python2.3/site-packages']

:( :( :(

GTK-Gnutella works well for me though

:w00t: I finally got pinned. :D Also, another BT client is ABC.

OK, since I'm guessing this post will be read, I'd like to direct your attention to the other semi-pinned threads floating around in here. :)

Theres an emule client called amule as well. It uses less system resources compared to xmule.

amule (http://amule.sourceforge.net)

Posted by: bogaaa

hehe this is great... however I cant install MLdonkey with Kconfigure,
I get this message "It does not have a valid exit status"
What does it mean, if anyone can help a nOOb that would be great

Posted by: LSA

Try configuring it the regular way, just do this:

./configure
make
make install <--- as root

Then post a more detailed error message.

Also read the readme file for options you can add.

Posted by: bogaaa

I have never read so much in my entire live these past 2 days
why isnt there a damn standard for installz on linux (like windows) :frusty: :frusty: :frusty:

I been using amule for a few months now. It works a lot better than xmule because you can use GTK1 instead of bloated GTK2. :)

I'll be posting up a couple of guides for the more popular apps soon. :)

Yeah me too. Only thing is I need to find something that's kinda universal for all distros. :)

Hi,

Apollon should be moved from "Proprietary" to "Multiple Networks." It will work with FastTrack, Gnutella and OpenFT.

right then - does anyone have a binary news client that will work on linux? Im considering jumping (again), but this is an absolute must now.

Posted by: Tonkka

The best BT-client for linux is TorrentFlux (http://www.torrentflux.com). It uses BitTornado/BitTorrent as backend and as frontend it uses Apache and PHP in combination with MySQL. This way you have a user-friendly interface, but without annoying graphics. It also makes it easy to use remotely without vnc/vpn... if you opt for security, just forward port 80 through SSH or link through Kerberos. ;)

Posted by: 4play

ares galaxy was recently made open source so with any luck there will be an offical linux clinet forthe network soon.

does linux increase network datarate efficiency? I remember my connection having a nice 40-50kb/s increase in speed using it to download some stuff. Maybe it was just lucky, but I normally don't reach 380-400kb/s that much.
Download accelerators help achieve something rather around 340kb/s in windows , but rarely 400kb/s.

No. Both BitSpirit and uTorrent are Windows only.

lol - its amusing that it took all this time, but i do actuall still flick in and out of here. Ive tried linux a few times, but just never "got away" with it. One problem is the other half, who would probably get annoyed trying to learn...maybe one day ;)

Posted by: 4play

just tell her its the new windows vista for the first few weeks until she gets used to it.

No. Both BitSpirit and uTorrent are Windows only.

You can run utorrent through wine.

Never bothered, tho', myself.

Posted by: onbit

try also Ktorrent, or BitTornado. But Ktorrent is one of the best there is.

FileZilla is a good FTP software

FileZilla is a good FTP software

If you are using FileZilla, make sure you have your drive encrypted, becuase all of the login details are stored in plaintext in xml files

I have steered clear of it since i discovered this, i prefer to use CrossFTP now, or FTPRush through wine/crossover :)
