Radeon 9700 Opengl

Alright, this has been bugging the hell out of me for months and I want to fix it once and for all. I'm a relative Linux Newbie and I want to know how I can get the Linux OpenGL drivers to work with my Radeon 9700 Pro. I'm running SuSE 9.0 with Kernel 2.4.21

I've installed the latest drivers, set up fglrx, and yelled at the machine and yet still lack 3D accelleration and have lousy performance on my desktop. Does anyone have a way to solve this problem? I know that Radeon can work in Linux, I've seen it, I just don't know how to do it.

Posted by: killer04

I am having the same problem with my ati radeon 7500.... I cant even find its official drivers on its site.

Posted by: shn

3d accelleration is not fully support in Linux yet. You risk the chance of your box hanging and crashing frequently. :)

Posted by: bogaaa

why U need 3d acceleration on linux anyway? It's not like you can play
COD on it

You should try Mandrake 9.2. As distributions progress they have newer versions of Xfree86 and newer graphic cards are added to the list. :)

You need to get your system to boot into runlevel 3. That means you will have a text based console and networking.

You will have to install the driver and then edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config file with vi, or emacs.

The easy way for "you" to change your runlevel from 5 to 3 is to use Linuxconf (http://www.solucorp.qc.ca/linuxconf/) :)

As been said. You need to tell X what driver to use.

Edit this /etc/X11/XF86Config

Is there a difference between a 5600xt and a 5600se?

You said before you had a 5600xt. The board in your config file says 5600se.

Most people do not understand the importance of installing the correct driver for Xfree86 to be fully functional.

Eventhough another driver that is almost the exact same model of your card may give you a graphical interface, it will not be "fully" functional.

Provided you had the correct driver installed, enabling 3d acceleration would have been as simple as marking the little check box in sax2. :)

Forgive my cruel words, I was making a joke and was in that kind of mood. So far I've garnered only a little out of this whole discussion, but I'll use what I've learned.

Oh, and just so you know, I'm male (just in case you were thinking I wasn't). I'm still mysterious and sexy though ;)

I worded it wrong...

How could someone just look at your config file and tell you what is wrong?

You need to say what you did, exactly. Did you get it too install? Do you see an nvidia splash screen when you start X? From what you provided I can't really help you, and I was asking for more information.

Did you try Mesa3d? http://www.mesa3d.org/

Hmmm, i dont find a driver for ati radeon 7500 on www.ati.com. Does anyone know what graphic card i should choose when i am insalling Mandrake 9? Last time i chose just ATI but the graphics got messed up.

Posted by: bogaaa

First thing you need to do is not install mandrake since it has many security problems.
You dont want to get hacked now do you? Install suse 90 it is much easyer to use
and finds all hardware by its self

Well, to be honest it does not matter what distro you use when it comes to wether your graphics card is suported.

It relies solely on the version of Xfree86 that the distro is using. To make it simple, just find out what version of Xfree86 is used with the distro and check the Xfree86 site for that version and it will tell you if your card is supported.

http://www.xfree86.org/

If your card is only supported in a newer version of Xfree86 then install the latest version. :)

There is no 3d acceleration for your card yet

XFree86 4.2 (or later versions) includes 3D acceleration for the following graphics hardware:

ATI Radeon, supported on Intel x86, AMD and Alpha:

* Radeon SDR AGP
* Radeon DDR AGP
* Radeon 32MB SDR PCI (Alpha-based systems)
* Radeon 7000, M6 (RV100)
* Radeon 7200 (R100)
* Radeon 7500, M7 (RV200)
* Radeon 8500, 9100 (R200)
* Radeon 9000, M9 (RV250)

You will just have to wait :)

Ok thanx for the info... So that 3d acceleration is only to play games...

Posted by: shn

You might be able to play games without 3d acceleration.

This is the only video game I have ever played in my whole life and it works fine without 3d acceleration. :P
http://www.tuxracer.com/

But for big games like the ones you probably want you would just have to try it and see :)

I got around 30-40fps, usually get 40-50 in windows, but thats with the default config file :P
