(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)Posted by: Dray_04
ok done step 1 in my first attempt to overclock my barton 2500+
my temps are 26 case... 42 CPU... yes i know thats pretty high for idle... i dont know why its so high? but it was in the high 50s b4 i added the AC5!
hmmm... should i carry on with the overclock.... ill keep posting in on my updates.
Posted by: bigdawgfoxx
Run it at full load for about an hour at least and see what the temps are.
Make sure you apply a VERY thing layer of AS5.
Run Folding at home or a burn in test.

i could really do with some advise from u bigdawg.....and that other person who has ther 2500 OC to 3200...i forgot ur name

damn i didnt c ur reply :P
for an HOUR!!!!! ok....
then i go into my BIOS and change the frequencies and multipliers ay....
damn someone post a link to the CPU OC guide plz

kaiweler, he has his 2500 barton at 3200 with very cool temps.. 30degrees cpu i think. He is applying AS5 today so that should lower his temps even more..
EDIT: he also has 7 fans
Posted by: bigdawgfoxx
I dont believe his temps are being read right really....
Yes, run it for an hour, then tell us the temps. 40C Idle seems kinda high...how many case fans do you have and where are they?

My temps are reading perfectly fine, how many times must I tell yout hat the screenshot I showed you was JUST after my comp started up, then the temps go to normal, don't you people listen? I've said it at least 5 times

These are mine RIGHT NOW, after playing cs for a while but now pretty much just sitting idle
and btw, my room is cold
and that is at 3200+ speeds
Posted by: bigdawgfoxx
I didnt say YOU werent reading them right..I was talking about you motherboard might not be reading the temps right. But I saw a screenshot where it started at 17C and there its not at full load or nething and its at 39C...thats a big diff and kinda wierd.
I think sometime we should buy a small refridgerator..and put our cpu in that...that would be tight haha
Posted by: Dray_04
lol.
F@H is download a new core or something?
shit how long does this take...
Posted by: abu_has_the_power
u have to wait a while for the as5 to start working b4 u start to c any temp changes. i think u have to have the cpu run for 72 hrs (max) b4 u start to c temp changes.
Posted by: Dray_04
phewww.. thats a relief
Posted by: bigdawgfoxx
Mine were still 27C when I first applied it lol.
Posted by: Dray_04
doesnt this sound weird....
2 case fans blowing air out, while small desktop fan blowing fresh air in.
before....
AMD athlon 2000+ 1.6Ghz
-usually on all day and night
-basic thermal paste
-average temps (case: 25-30 CPU 25-30 idle)
-iv had this processor for over a year
now...
[U]AMD Athlon 2500+ barton core 1.83Ghz
-brand spanking new (i only tested it once before, about a week ago)
-arctic silver 5
-temps: (case 25-30 CPU: anywhere between 40 and 50)
-just installed the processor an hour ago....
so why is the temps so high?? dont tell me that Motherboard Monitor 5 is reading the temps wrong because it ISNT!.
I have been running F@H for about 30min non stop now and my CPU temp seems to be at 49-50 degrees celcius...
Posted by: bigdawgfoxx
Thats higher then mine is and mines overclocked...

How do people do stuff like this? 1 Penny for a 9800XT....is that really true?
Here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2793829978&category=40158)
Posted by: Dray_04
 1 penny would be good ay.
id even pay for the shipping (to NZ)
anyway, what does that have to do with this topic bigdawg?
im getting annoyed at these temp readings!! why o why? :music1:
i hope they go back down to 30-35
or even lower, on my CPU i have a heatsink that has a copper bottom, and i applied the AS5 to the copper.... thats ok ay? i mean, i can apply AS to the copper ay?

Wrong.
AS5 ( and any silver compound, for that matter) needs 200 hours of thermal cycling to properly normalize.
Basically, you just run it up to full load temp and then shut down and let the chip cool to room ambient.
Repeat.
A lot.
In theory this will result in lower temps eventually, although I can't say I've seen any noticable drops as yet.
At best, you might get 1-3 deg. reduction, so don't hold your breath waiting for magic to occur.
Maybe you could get Abu to wave his magic HDD over your HSF and cast a spell.
Posted by: Dray_04
so AC5 is only going to drop my usual temps for 3 degree
Posted by: clocker
Your current temps with AS5 will only improve a bit even after it has had a chance to settle in.
I'd start looking at other reasons/solutions for your quandary....
Posted by: Dray_04
ok ive overclocked it.
its running stable at 2.2 ghz like a 3200
however the temps as usual are a big issue here....
something must be wrong because the temps at the mo are
51 degrees celcius
wheww thats hot.
that idle as well... im not even going to attempt to run F@H, cause i no the temps will go higher....
so where do i go from here....back down the the normal frequency and fan?
i think it has something to do with the heatsinks. i have 2 here.... 1 with my old cpu (2000+) and a new one that i have on now. it has a copper plate mounted on the bottom of it.
mayb il chuck the old CPU fan/hs on
Posted by: bigdawgfoxx
Dont overclock yet...wait till your normal temps are normal. What HS are you using? The stock one doesnt have copper.
Put it back at stock settings for now untill you can get your temps down.
I have 2 case fans in front, and 2 in back, and stock hs with an 80mm fan on it...I dont know why your temps are so high..we have the same CPU...
2 case fans blowing air out, while small desktop fan blowing fresh air in. You said this earlier...What do you mean a small desktop fan? Put 2 good 80mm fans or 120mm fans in there to make sure there is plenty of cold air. Look at the topic I made where we posted the pics of our comps, and look at the upclose of the side on my case. I have a fan at the very bottom left, and then I moved the bracket from the first HDD rack to the second one (closer to the PSU and CPU) so that it is blowing right on it. Try something like that maybe.
Also, what were your steps of applying the AS5?
Posted by: lynx
The new stock HS has a copper insert in the base.
Personally I don't think it is as good as some of the others.
My temp is currently 47C (full load) but only running at 2GHz at the moment as it wasn't completely stable at 2.2GHz.
I've raised Vcore prior to boosting the FSB again, but I really want to get that temp down first.
I'm seriously looking at getting one of those table top freezers.
Posted by: bigdawgfoxx
hmmm the new ones come with a copper insert..mine wasnt copper...it was silver...i duno what its made of lolol.
But i would think his would be better...apparently not lol

i just thought of something...maybe your motherboard is supplying the voltage for your old athlon xp 2000+ (which is 1.75 if you have palamino core) when it should be giving 1.65 which is the normal barton core temp. check in bios or motherboard monitor what the vcore is and report back.

vb said your board reads sensors wrong so maybe your board is reading teh sensor wrong...obviously lol...but it could be reading it higher than it really is.
Posted by: Dray_04
i hope so....
so even the BIOS temps are wrong? because MMB reads exactly the same temps as the BIOS....
ill post a few pics soon

You could touch it and see if it's hot? Or try this http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20031230/index.html. Defiantly lower your temps.

If it seems stable and there's no signs of problems I wouldn't worry... My CPU runsat 50* all day long and all night and i have no problems.

also i am having troubles with my AGP.
its disabled and i have no idea why? i didnt manually diable it. i have the latest drivers for my radeon 9600xt. grrr  every thing seems to be going wrong.
youll notice in that pic that my AGP status sez disabled. how do i enable it. iv tried manually sliding it back to 8 x agp using Rage3D tweak v3.9b and then it asks me to reboot to make changes..... i reboot and nothing happens... its back on 0

read my earlier posts in this thread... i did,
but bigdawg sed not to until i sorted out why my temps r crazy

You said it was stable and it seems to only have gone up a few degrees, maybe your temps are being read wrong in every program.
Posted by: Dray_04
i hope so,
anyway its slowly going down i think,
ive been chatting online, surfing, listening to songs, etc. and my CPU is down to 43...
ill keep it on for a few more days, and ill see if it gets better, then ill look towards overclocking it
Posted by: j4y3m
Do you live in a particully hot place? Has it been epecially hot today because maybe just the air made it hot todaynow that it's nite it's getting colder.
Posted by: Dray_04
nope i live in New Zealand.... average temps are anywhere between 16 degrees and 26 degrees during the summer.
its quite cold today.... my computer is under my desk. its pretty cool.... constantly 27-28 degrees for case.
Posted by: j4y3m
All I can say to help then is just make sure air can get in and out of your case and then just leave it for awhile to see if it cools down. :)
Posted by: Dray_04
thanks.
currently got 43 degrees.... overclocked....
:)
thats idle, so im hoping itll go down. ill run it thru sum tests 2morow.
Posted by: Virtualbody1234
@dray_02,
I have told you, those temps aren't right. That motherboard has a known issue about temps. Your actual temps are 10 to 15°C lower than shown (even in BIOS).
I have even PMed you about this. Obviously i'm wasting my time with you so this is the last time I will tell you about this. Why don't you want to listen to someone who has the same board as you?
Posted by: Dray_04
YAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks VB
i thort i did say i believed you. hmmm :) :) :)
well if that is true then that mean my CPU is running 33-34 degrees idle and about 40-45 100%
phewwww now i can stop worrying about stuffing up my new overclocked barton :)

just to make sure you should feel the heatsync and see if its hot, if it is only kinda warm then the temps are in the 30's, if its really hot its probably above 40.

cheers rossco, ill keep that in mind
