can i install mandrake on the same hd as xp if i make a new partition, and if so what would be the best way to make the partition? thx much

Use partition magic, resize your partitions to leave as much space as desired unallocated then put in the mandrake cd and install it on the unallocated space.
There are more in depth tutorials around, check 'new to linux' in linux section, and google.
