> A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by
> Microsoft as the most

> As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened the computer freezes so
that
> the user has to
> reboot. When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the reset button are pressed,

> disk. Yesterday in just a few hours this virus
> caused panic in New York, according to news broadcast by CNN.

viruses that destroy your boot sector are not uncommom its just mass mailing worms will create more traffic on the internet and get noticed more so thats all we have seen for a while. now it seems the old skool do as much damage as possible worms are back.
i would imagine if this is true its is probably exploiting the latest set of patches microsoft just released. :(

Wouldn't it be possible to repair such a drive with Active@killdisk (http://www.killdisk.com/) ?
Posted by: delphin460
this is a very old joke/hoax virus warning , its been around for years
it is not possible to destroy your harddrive with any virus, you may loose your info and need to repatition and reformat , but no virus can destroy hardware
Read the following from symantec if you dont believe me
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen...rd.for.you.html (http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/virtual.card.for.you.html)
Dont believe every virus warning you get via email
to be sure check sources like symantec , b4 you post comments that spread what is a joke / hoax warning

you could just boot from a xp cd, go into the recovery console and fixmbr.
of course most people would panic and re-install

actually that's not entirely true....some virus can be programmed to have the hdd seek needle going so busy that hdd will become useless after a few weeks...

That's not entirely true. There have been some viri that corrupt CMOS data so in effect kill motherboards.
I know that CMOS chips can be replaced but that sometimes becomes not worthwhile if you think about costs, shipping, time and what newer boards have to offer. Its easier to replace such a motherboard.

What are you doing in charge of a PC if you're believing in this bullshit for a start. You can tell it's a fake by the way that email sounds. It's like the "I live in Zimbabwe and I own a diamond mine..." type emails.

My wife isn't the sharpest tool in the shed :fear: and I don't even think she would fall for this one. I sure as hell can't believe that your teachers at your school are stupid enough to.
The first thing I do when I get an email from somebody about a supposed virus is go to www.symantec.com and do a search for the particular virus. When I find the info I need I decide what to do.If it is actually a virus,I do whatever it says to do to protect my PC.If it is a Hoax I do nothing.I may call a couple relatives or the friends who sent it to me and let them know it is BS but I never send an email back to the people that the email has been forwarded to.If you do this you are just sending a bunch of unneaded emails ,exactly what the creator of the hoax wants you to do.
