What Are Cracks? How Do They Work?

I recently downloaded a trial version of a game but it expires and I'm just wondering if a crack fixes this problem. If not, could someone explain what a crack does?

Cracks do lots of stuff, it's a collective name for unauthorised tweaks to a program.
Could have to do with the removal of copy protection, enabling of play without a cd where a cd is usually required, or stopping the time limit on a trial etc.
Try googling for the name of the .exe for the game in question, finding a crack might be that easy.

Having put a nice scratch through my warcraft 3 disk and downloaded over 300 "no cd" cracks from different sources, i found Norton rejected every one. Because of the numbers involved i would suggest that organisations rather than individuals are at work, and that only those with fully updated anti virus software, mated with firmly crossed fingers go down that road. :ghostface:
I gave up in the end.
