so i'm watching jackass the movie dvd, my pc freezes, i turn it off, then on - now it says insert boot diskette in drive A

Sounds like your CMOS has reset...since the A: drive is the default first boot device it's now looking around for a floppy to boot from.
Try entering BIOS and changing that.

No, CMOS would scan it and move on. If it was soething like this, it could be that the harddrive was disable as a boot device.
