Whats Everybody's Speaker Setup
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)Posted by: pc-gamer-dude
I'm wondering what everybodys current speaker setup is for there computers.
Mine:
I have 2 Bose Model 31 speakers hooked up as fronts, using my Regent HT-500 to give them power. and I'm using the woofer that came with my dvd player, I'm also using a Logitech Z-640 subwoofer and center speaker (in matrix mode).
It sounds pretty good, gets pretty loud to.

2 cheap ass speakers in front of me and a wimpy little sub underneath me.

creative 5.1 speakers, sound really good, cept my rears are at the side of me so it gets a little strange when the surround sound kicks in. :P
Also I am using my onboard sound and for some reason my speakers won't output as they should as in front left ain't front left etc etc. Good for games where you hear something behind you, turn round , only to find it in front of you

i also have some logitech z-640's, used to use them, but i use headphones (sony MDR-G57's) more often than speakers so i let my dad have them for his computer (at the time he was using the 540's).
when i get to teh basement im also gonna hook up a 400watt stereo behind me...i'd do it now but i don't have speakers for it yet.

:D 800 watts of pure power, and a 200watt sub on the side :D

For the record...you don't need alot of power to get good, loud sound.
Meh, wattage means nothing to me or anyone with gray matter between their ears.
Wattage is used as a marketing gimmick. Don't be fooled. The true specs can easily be manipulated to sell product.
Go to a fine audio store(not Best Buy, Ciruit City, et al) and listen to truly good audio equipment and you'll learn something new.
I use a simple pair of JBL Pro PC speakers and they sound particularly nice.
my .02¢

Yeah wattage aint everything....but it does have a little something to do with how loud it is. 100 watts is a lot better then 20.
I got some 4.1s...I had a picture but I dont feel like uploadin lol

I couldn't agree more.
Yes the best judges of good quality sound are your own ears.
Don't be fooled by PMPO, PPO or anything other than RMS when gauging power output, but by the same token high output is worthless if the actual quality is piss-poor.
Hardcoregamer's setup looks impressive doesn't it? But wait... where's the rest of the specs? What about THD? >85dB snr isn't that great and how flat is the frequency response? It's OK for manufacturers to quote figures like 20Hz-22,000Hz but it'll sound shit if there's awful rolloff either side of a 1-15KHz range.
Not dissing your setup Hardcoregamer, just using your specs to illustrate a point.
Regardless, I hope you're all playing decent rawk on them. :D
Reminds me of goons playin loud music while they drive - sure the systems sound awsome, but they don't appear to choose music they like as much as music that makes their system sound good.

@ hardcore gamer, do they sound good in your ears? if they sound good then that's all that matters.
i'm not sure what the wattage and other specs of mine are, probably not that great, but to me they sound really really good and even at really loud levels.

When your tight on cash
Those bose headphones don't do shit their like mine up there only they cost 13 times more and have noise cancelling

Now those zalman ones are nice because it actually has something there to make a surround sound expierience

They are Mission 702e, bought them a few years ago for about £200 I think, have a really nice sound to them and cos they're floorstanding you don't have to find a shelf for them. Take up a lot of room though.
These are obviously home audio speakers rather than computer speakers, but if that's what you're after brands like KEF, B&O, Mission, Yamaha all do good stuff. Best bet is to look at the amp that'll be powering them and try and get a good match.
Amp is a Dolby Digital Sony STR DB940, but I only really use it in stereo unless I'm watching DVDs.

I wont , ever, buy a speaker on a plastic box.
Its a princible, Im a guitarist and I think the Wood
jas something better to say to the sounf than Plastic.
Besides, most of those Logitech and similar Plastik-Surround-Setting
Speakers looks so tiny that im afraid I'd lose them on the flat
if I had the, he he....
I got a pair of old Mission speakers, not really good sound but
I got decent headphones for that.
The Plastic Sets a'la Creartive Labs and whatnot,
they are really unimpressive, and the marketing + hype really
seems to works on the kids.

I normally use one of two setups.
this one is setup in my bedroom and is hooked up to the pc
http://www.btinternet.com/~violetg/a5i_image.jpg
cambridge audio a5i
60watts per channel
http://www.btinternet.com/~violetg/9453.jpg
eltax silverstone 200
100 Watt / 45-20000 Hz / 4-8 Ohm
the second stero is normally only eveer turned on for house parties or when im really drunk.
http://www.btinternet.com/~violetg/gemini.jpg
gemini x1
220Wrms At 8 Ohm Bridged Mono
110Wrms Per Channel At 4 Ohm
85Wrms Per Channel At 8 Ohm
http://www.btinternet.com/~violetg/speakers.gif
gemini gsm 1250
Amplifier’s Output Power: 100 Wrms
Frequency Response: 40Hz-20kHz
Impedance: 8 Ohms
even though the second setup is alot more powerful and is designed to be pushed up to loud volumes it does not sound any where near as good as my normal setup. general 10 mins of listening in a medium sized room gives you ear ache.
I was always told a 40 watt amp and a decent pair of speakers can fill any room in your house with sound.
