Okay first of all I have no problems ripping a DVD then converting it to AVI then to mpeg my problem is this.... when ripping using smart ripper a DVD it will get to about 50% done then it will say unable to find block, Now my DVD Rom is pretty shit I think its only writes at 4x speed and read speed of 24 My theory is that it just overheats Ie tried it on several DVD disk and it does the same thing Is it possible to do this without a DVD ROM drive or should I just by a new one??

nope i sorry u need a dvd drive to read a dvd! :)
u could give dvd decrypter a tri its better than smripper :)
ps just curious!! if ur desire is ripping a dvd to vcd y do u convert to avi first would'nt it b easyer ,quick and alot better quality to use a frame server then tmpeg to vcd :)

If you want to convert DVD to VCD i find that Eazy VCD is a nice prog to do this
