Good War Movies?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just watched Black Hawk Down, and that was top shelf.

Being that our boys of the summer are raising hell in Iraq, seems like a good time to load up on good old fashion war movies. Now I have seen all of the classics Platoon, Full Medal Jacket, Saving Pvt Ryan... But what are the other good ones that are sometimes over looked? Was that Mell gibson one in Vietnam any good?

Posted by: candyman

Das Boot (The Boat), Brilliant film even tho its subtitled
Also "Hope and Glory" set in london during the blitz
This may not be a film but i thought that the series "Band of Brothers" was excellent
just been watching the repeats on cable in the Uk best drama in a long time

Posted by: zhelynd

"Saving private Ryan" should be the king of all war movies, "K-19 Widowmaker" is also very intense, if "Forrest Gump" can also be classified as a war movie, then it would be my third

Posted by: Schmiggy_JK23

Gettysburg, and Full Metal Jacket... classics...

Posted by: Wallace_Askew

The news...CNN, MSNBC.
plenty of action there ;)

Enemy At The Gate, Kelly's Heroes, and The Dirty Dozen are all worth a mention here.

just my 2 cents worth

Posted by: jetje

Hamburger Hill..... shows stupidity of war better as every other movie
We were soldiere once.. is pretty good
The killing fields... more war madness
enemy down below... is a great submarine picture
platoon
The beast of war... one of my all time favorites... it's about a tank...
the already mentioned enemy at the gates was good

Not to miss... Apocalypse now

and for everyone who thinks: If we just send in the best it finished soon and none of us die..... rambo2 tilll 99

APOCALYPSE NOW...
yes indeed, an awesome war movie.

The Deer Hunter. Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, Meryl Streep in one of the best movies ever made. Only half of it is set in Vietnam but The whole of the film revolves around that theme. Just a brilliant film, see it if you haven't.

Also The Thin Red Line was pretty good, if a little slow moving.

Posted by: neevakee

although not exactly war related Spy Game is pretty good. I also recomend (although already mentioned) The Killing Fields and Enemy at the Gates

Although not modern war. The Patriot and Glory

Posted by: Jayhawk

We Were Soldiers is a good movie

Posted by: TeKeNKiD

I really enjoyed Windtalkers, it was a little sentimental but
overall a good movie.

The THin red line is pretty good but i dont know if you can find it!!

Cross of Iron by Sam Peckinpah. A classic film about German soldiers on the Russian Front during the latter stages of the Second World War. Slow motion violence abounds. Strong anti-war message as well!

Braveheart was a war movie, not a Guns Blazing type but still thought it was a good war movie.

Flight of the Intruder was alright, but my favorite war'esque movie would probably be The Final Countdown, it is where a modern day (80's) aircraft carrier goes back in time to find themselves right in the middle of the Pearl Harbor Invasion.

I would have to say the science fiction aspect raises this one above most and does it with a bit of style.

For grainy realism I would have to suggest as some others movies like Hamburger Hill or Apocalypse Now. However the Bridge On The River Kwai has always been a favorite of mine.

One of my favorite World War movies is A Midnight Clear, excellent movie.

Also try Bravo Two Zero 1999, a british film similar to Black Hawk Down, pretty good.

Zulu - Thousands of them

The Big Red One - Excellent!!!

Catch 22 - Wartime insanity.

Posted by: Oregonian

has anyone seen "Stalingrad".....such a great movie about the war between Germans and Russians.
Also, Bridge over River Kwai is good.
And, Schindler's List....awesome.

Posted by: SuperJude™

There is a movie called "The Longest Day" about the D-Day invasion of Europe. Great movie in that is had a huge cast and you got to see the Brits, the Yanks and the French resistance all in seperate scenes and it was one of the first movies to use long sweeping shots from a helicopter POV.

Reall far reaching flick, and you even get to see the various German personas and the movie maker focuses on the regular German Army types who knew they had been screwed over by Hitler.

Not on dvd I don't think yet, but I know it's on vhs.

Thin Red Line is one of my favourite movies too and not just one of my favourite war movies.

I think I saw a verified for this movie somewhere, but unfortunately I forgot where. :(
But I do think it is out there somewhere. :)

P.S. Are you talking about Adrien Brody, who was also in The Pianist with another great performance, as I have heard?

Posted by: SuperJude™

Well of course my all time fave has to be Apocalypse Now Redux, since it was a very weird, very far reaching flick with some great performances. Hell just seeing Lawrence Fishburn at 15 is awesome.
