In my opinion, there is really no best.. Some may have their pros and cons. What i think it comes down to is how you config your eMule client to maximize your download/upload performance.

eMule plus for the ed2k newcomer.
MorphXT for the more experienced.

Because Morph has tons of advanced features that newbies wouldn't use until they'd acquired an understanding of how the ed2k network operates.
That's why I always recommend eMule plus for the ed2k newbie. Plus is an excellent client for learning the basics. MorphXT is the next logical step, imho.
What are its significant advanced features?
- MorphXT has the ability to hide overshares.
- Supports selective chunk sharing.
- Offers a better implimentation of the IRC/friends list.
- Incorporates WebCache, EastShare and quite a few other nice mods, all in one neat package.
Those are some of my favorite features, just to give you an idea. As Vargas said, there's way too many to list. :)

I've used the Shareaza client, it sucks. Months and months and zero downloads on the donkey network. I'm looking @ morphXT now.

yeah same here, shareaza sucks. lots of hits on the searches, no downloads.
back to emule for rare files, azureus and limewire pro for common files (way faster!)

I prefer standard emule because it tends to get patched against security holes earlier than the derivatives.

uhmm... lsd mod is widely considered as a leecher mod ;)
i use morphxt, zzul has some nice releaser features, but i dont think its a good mod to start with for beginners :)

If you are lowid then a different version of emule will not help. You have to correct your firewall or network configuration.

i use emule 0.46c for a while and I think is the best, but if you want more option get MorphXT
