Backing up my files

in the past i have been backing up of music / video files onto DVDs.

But reently, i had to use one of my backed-up DVD and I kept getting Redundancy problems. So could not get my backed up files.

Scared with this experience, I am looking for new ways to backup my files.

What do u suggest, I should use to backup music / video files.

Four points to remember if your backups are important.

Make sure your burner is in good condition and allow it to cool off between disks.
Make sure you use a good brand of blank media.
If your disks aren't double coated make sure you put a paper label on them.
Keep your disks away from sunlight and heat and make sure they don't get scratched.

As long as you follow those rules DVD is about the best media for backup.

One more thing...

Burn at slow speeds.

An external hard disk is fine as long as you remember that :

1) it's capacity is not unlimited, and you can't just by new media for it.
2) it is relatively expensive.
3) if it fails you lose everything, not just a few GB.

That third point alone would make it unfeasible as far as I was concerned.

Surely though, if you are talking about backup then you still have the original and can make another backup. I suspect that you actually mean your only copy. If so, the safest reasonable method is still DVD, but with an actual backup that never sees the light of day unless your "working" copy becomes corrupt.

I also suggest another strategy. Suppose you can hold 10 albums on a dvd. Your "live" copies could hold albums 1-10, 11-20, 31-30 etc. Your backup copies could hold albums 1,11,21,31...; 2,12,22,32...; 3,13,23,33... etc. So even in the unlikely event that a live disk and a backup disk failed completely, there would only be a single album which was unrecoverable.
