The world's first interactive 3D display has been developed by IO2 Technology (http://www.io2technology.com/dojo/204/v.jsp?p=/home). HelioDisplay creates 3D displays in the air using lasers, drawing input from computers, TVs and DVDs. It also allows interactive applications to be controlled by a finger, instead of a mouse. "Our first generation version, the Heliodisplay, projects TV, streaming video and computer images into free space, (mid-air)", the company's website claims.

they are probably using steam or fog substance onto which the laser can project.
This is probably why there are stripes.
laser or projection can only be visible if it actually has something to "project" on...

If you look at this site which specializes in fog screens youll understand the concept
and why there are stripes

Haha. Im sure if you hooked a camera up to your computer, and one of those up to the computer, you could do star wars communication type thing. Just get a 3d image of yourself as a JEDI!!!

to make the "star wars" holograms, they'd have to find some way to physically limit the wavelenghts of the light emitted. right now, all we can do is project something onto another substance that will block and stop the light, producing an image. but this looks pretty damn close to those holo-communicator thingies
