Can I change my Proxy for my dial up ISP

I am on 56K dial up.

I like to use a file storeage download service (Rapidshare)

They say that someone with the same internet proxy number as me is downloading too much from them and will not let me download very often.

Is there anyway I can change my proxy number ?

Unless you are using an ISP such as AOL, why would you be utilizing a proxy service considering that you are on dial-up in the first place?

Some UK providers do the prqoxy-ing before teh bandwidth even gets to your modem, meaning you can't do anything about it. Try downloading the file late at night (3-4AM) because there will be less UK users with your ISP trying to get the file then.

Although I am a big computer fan from way back I do not know much about internet connections, etc.

All I know is that I am on dial up and my ISP says that they do not use proxies.

Yet when I go to download a file from Rapidshare they often say that I must be on a proxy as my IP number has downloaded too much that day when I have downloaded a thing for 2 days !

So I suppose that I will try what you suggest Peerzy.

But is there a way I can make up a proxy number and use it myself ?

Or is Rapidshare just telling me this so that I buy their pay for service ?

Is it possible that your account login has perhaps been compromised and being used by others or different computers? Usually the same 56k dial-up account and the connection it establishes can be accessed using any phoneline.

Well, you can always enter a different proxy address.

Here is how u do it,

go to http://www.publicproxyservers.com/index.html

find any good anonymous proxy server and put the given address and port in internet explorer.

For internet explorer goto Tools > internet options > connections > lan settings > proxy settings.....put the ip and port info there and walla you will be connected through that proxy.....change as often as you like!

At issue may be the fact you are on a dial-up connection. Your IP address is dynamic(as opposed to static like broadband users). Therefore it's different every time you dial-up.
(check www.whatismyip.com to confirm)

Since your ISP has a limited block of the same IP addresses to assign, someone else using the same ISP may be the root cause.
