I have had windows xp pro installed for over a year now and find it a superb system despite many problems with drivers and compatability but was told by a friend that windows 2000 is a much better system to use. As a somewhat novice I would like to hear about the pro's and con's of these windows systems. Many thanks for your help, Dave (Luckydog)

Choices, Choices, Choices. Everyone will have a different opinion. Some will tell you Win XP is a dog and others will tell you that it is the greatest thing since Peanut Butter. If Windows XP is working fine for you stick with it. Do not sway with the wind too much. I work with both systems and I like them both. But I perfer XP Pro.

Go with XP- 2k with all the service packs etc is about the same, but XP Pro has a few more goodies in it, it's also newer and more user friendly.

I used Xp and 2k for each a year... I perfer 2k more, it almost never crashed with me.
XP I had constant problems with, formating once a month with XP was normal, as with 2k I never formated...
Go with 2k in my opinion.

then you want either Windows 2000, windows 2000 pro, or windows 2000 advanced server. The only thing better would be Linux.
There is no just Windows 2000.. The main, home user version is Professional, then there's 3 server versions (Server, Advanced Server and Datacenter Server)...

I myself prefer Win2k Pro, cause XP is basically win2k with a pretty interface and some other extra "bloat" that reports back to M$ periodically not to mention it's got that activation shit

I would use windows xp without a doubt. But what may stop you is driver compatability or maybe your pc may not be able to handle it.

What are your specs?

Why go for them. Get windows server 2003. A key has already been leaked.

Some say XP Pro is better, some say 2000. If you're currently running XP Pro, and not having problems, don't waste your time reformatting just to isntall Windows 2000. Windows 2000 is a very impressive piece of software, very stable, but if you haven't experienced problems with XP why switch? And for those saying you have to reinstall over and over again you obviously can't take care of your computer. I've reformatted my computer once since I upgraded to XP, which was a year and a half ago. Take care of your computer, chances are you ruined XP by something you downloaded. Either way both OS's are great but there's no reason to change from one to the other.

Hi, Many many thanks for all those useful replies ..... reading between the lines it seems not many of you have bad things to say about windows 2000 whereas xp pro has many downfalls especially driver problems and compatability etc. I was told to remove software that was causing problem but I don't know what software it is. The only thing that seems to be a problem is windows explorer ? I cannot remove this, any suggestions ... I was told to use Netscape ???

It actually crashed again while I was reading your replies so I think I will give 2000 a try. Nothing to lose although someone mentioned windows server 2003 ... does anyone know anything about this ?

Once again many thanks and keep up the good work, Dave (Luckydog)

From what you said you seem to be having problems with XP. I never did but I don't have your computer so going to Windows 2000 is a perfectly fine choice. You're not losing any.

2000 is a very stable op primarily designed for business, however it's not that hot for games

as for dual 98/xp booting you will have to make sure both partitions are running FAT32, 98 cannot read NTFS

triple boot systems? I'm not certain you can have both 2000 and 98 or is it 2000 and 98, i can't remember but check out microsofts sites help on dual boot sysytems, theres some type of limitation, along the lines of 95/98 is not possible

Myself I would stick to XP i have a home network and run 95, 98, Me, 2000 AS and Xp Pro, all on dual boot sysytems, no I'm not sad Just need to keep my hand in for work, for preference I use Xp as I find it best overall, Overall being the point

I've used every version of windows nice, and I must say that XP Professional is the best. Home edition is pretty much the same, but pro has some extra's that advanced users appreciate. Since you admit that you are a novice, I suggest you go with XP. It's more user-friendly than 2000.
