How do you know the drive is "running slow"?

Did a test with pc pitstop and this is what they reported
c f
Partition format NTFS--------------NTFS
Cluster size 4 KB-------------- 4 KB
Drive labe l GR1-----------------Gr2
Size 78152 MB------------117245 MB
Free space 13509 MB(17%) --42789 MB (36%)
Junk files 1 MB (0%)--------0 MB (0%)
Data fragmentation 12% -------------Not tested
File fragmentation 3% --------------Not tested
Uncached speed 39 MB/s (120%)---3 MB/s (9%

the result from f in the ucached speed is what worries me

Download (it's free) and run HD Tach (http://www.simplisoftware.com/Public/index.php?request=HdTach) .
You can test both drives and compare them.

I'll try it tomorrow as it won't allow anymore d/loads from that site today

This link should work. (http://www.majorgeeks.com/HDTach_d672.html)

That's pretty poor.

What SATA controller does your mobo use? MSI's site isn't clear on that.
What level of firmware has it got.
What drivers have you installed?

Have you checked the SMART data for errors? Everest should be able to display this for you.

It's gotta be the drivers.
Even Maxtor's don't run that badly.

Check in the Device Manager. What shows in the Device status and Policies?

I see that both of you show abnormally high CPU utilization.

Haven't a clue why, just thought I'd point that out.

Carry on.

problem sorted,I think, resolved by removing the sata cable completly, and repositioning it,from the sata 1 slot to the sata 2 slot on the m/board and reconnectin, seems like sata cables are a bit prone to working loose, thanks to all for suggestions

seems like sata cables are a bit prone to working loose, thanks to all for suggestionsThat's true, the new SATA II connectors have retaining clips. I would have thought it would simply stop working though. Presumably the CPU was running high trying to sort out all the CRC errors.

Edit: @HCT, obviously your problem can't be exactly the same, but it must be worth checking your cables.

It'll be interesting to see if it do's resolve his problem,as if we don't have enough probs with the bloody machines without it being simple yet hard to spot problems like a cable not being pushed in far enough, sheesh :pinch:

Ah.
At least I was half right then.

Glad you found the problem.

I was going to comment that your second drive was far from fine, although not as severely affected.
