C&C Red alert loading probs

I've just aquired Command and Conquer red alert and for some unkown reason to me i can't get it to install :( the message i get when trying to install is...
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not syitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. Choose 'close' to terminate the application

I'm running windows xp and i also tried the compatibility change

I've now managed to install the game but the problem i now have is when i try to play the game i get a black screen and another message saying...

Application error C:\Westwood\redalert\ra95.exe

An privileged instruction was executed at address 005c7c14
click ok to terminate the application
