Funcom extends the free offer on Anarchy Online into 2007
The free phenomena continues in the ultimate sci-fi MMORPG
Durham, USA — September 12, 2005 – Funcom announces that the free Anarchy Online offer has been a tremendous success and will be extended throughout all of 2006 and into 2007*. It’s the long-term goal for Funcom to make sure that the removal of subscription fees, client costs and the need to have a credit card when registering for Anarchy Online remains a permanent offering. Now, and for the year to come, anyone curious about the heralded qualities of the ultimate sci-fi MMORPG can play without any financial commitments.

“The free initiative has been a great success,” says Trond Arne Aas, CEO of Funcom. ”More than 400.000 new players have signed up during the last ten months, and extremely few MMO titles can show a similar increase in registrations in the same timeframe. Seeing the great feedback from the free offer we are thus going to extend it into 2007 and beyond.”

This totally free approach allows everyone tired of elves, fairies and gnomes to enter a futuristic RPG world full of fun action totally free of cost, and makes it possible for all sci-fi fans to explore a world hailed as the best sci-fi MMO available today.

I've never played AO before, anyone tell me if it's worth the time?

I haven't played in about a year but I did like the sci-fi theme better than elves.

I like how it has a lot of hidden variety. A knowlede of the game can be imbalancing and I liked that better than mmorpgs that are ruled strickly by player level.

the only thing about the free one is you can only take one path, and it's not really as nice graphically as most other rpgs. but you get what you pay for, it being free you cant expect but so much.

The game isnt that great. The beginning is funny, or NOOB island, but the game gets really boring, fast.

I used to love AO back in the days...

Sure it's not your "mindless" run of the mill WOW (not a bad game at all btw), and it might take you some time to get into. However the game do have distinct qualities like a unique, somewhat more mature community than most MMORPGs, a distinct sci-fi atmosphere, and 4 years worth of added content ++ ...

This game was pretty revolutionary in its time IMO.. Of course this beeing now a 4 year old game, the graphics and the game mechanics (though updated in some ways I hear) are of course somewhat lacking by todays standards.

Granted the game is not for everyone. The core game (without expansions) however is free.. So judge for yourself ;)

And surely if you played it for 20 min you didn't even scratch the surface... If you level up and get the expansions, there is a lot more to it than what is the NOOB island (pvp, land control, dungeons, socialising, guild cities - alien attacks on your city, a new dimension known as the shadowlands, exploring, raid / unique boss encounters, phat loot, and more - to mention some things to do on the top of my head).

Eve: Online should become free. Not anarchy online, thats a deserved monthly fee. They could use money to update the game too graphics of this time.

They're making more money than they ever did with the free offer. When you get the expansions they start to charge you the monthly fee... Just clever marketing.

Hell, I'm not immune myself. I recently signed up again on a free account, and is surprisingly having fun again. I might just get the expansions (for the second time), if I reach level 200.
