Unplug the HDD. You're done!

What do you want to do with a computer that has no OS?

what do you mean load into bios? the bios isnt a os of any kind, if you want to get to bios just press del at the startup, without any bios you wont get anything except a request to insert a boot disk like the XP CD or a MS-DOS boot disk

BIOS (basic input/output system) is the program a personal computer's microprocessor uses to get the computer system started after you turn it on. It also manages data flow between the computer's operating system and attached devices such as the hard disk, video adapter, keyboard, mouse, and printer. *You CANNOT run the bios as an operating system, since it can only run and configure the computer. It's extremely limited to this only.

To reformat is to completely delete a partition full of data (such as, reformatting the C drive). You can also perform a "wipe" instead which is more powerful than a reformat. It deletes the partition full of data, then writes 0s into it, preventing data recovery in most cases.

What is your goal here? I'm guessing you want to reinstall the operating system, due to a problem? I suggest a reformat, and reinstallation of windows...both can be done from the Windows installation cd.

Are you going to sell the computer? Get a copy of Kill Disk (http://www.killdisk.com/
) and "wipe" the hardrive. That way, your customer can't recovery your personal information.

Reformat isn't a DOS command.

Back to the topic... For a sold PC, remove any partitions and leave it as RAW. You can use the Windows XP CD to do this.

Alright can you please explain how to do it on the cd? It was installed with windows xp professional. But I don't see the option to clear anything. What does it say?

You have to boot the CD and just before the installation you have options to create partitions, delete partitions, format etc.

if you want the disk completly wiped get a boot floppy and type format into the dos prompt

or with the XP CD... boot with the CD and when it asks where you want to install it will give you the option to format the HDD select yes, job done

That doesn't work with NTFS partitions. DOS isn't compatible with NTFS.

fdisk first then reboot , type format c:/u or format c:/s and that works with NTFS. :)

peat moss is right, it does work, it just depends on if you know how , besides he never said if it was NTFS or not and that combined with the fact that he doesn't know how to format a HDD probaby means it's not.

VB is right about the boot from cd and "raw" post tho and that should of been be the end of it . Now that we know what the thread starter wants , but thats why there's forums like this to help . Many ways to skin a cat eh . :)

peat moss is right, it does work, it just depends on if you know how , besides he never said if it was NTFS or not and that combined with the fact that he doesn't know how to format a HDD probaby means it's not.I disagree. The default for Windows XP is NTFS. And I do know how.

Well the fact that he doesn't know how to format a HDD tells me that he didn't know how, it was never in question if you did or not.... besides I did also say that he could use the XP CD as well, which I don't really belive does have a default, it is more a choice of the user, however yes it is highly reccomended to use the NTFS, but it could have been FAT32

but as peat said... there are many ways

You can try Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") (http://dban.sourceforge.net/)

Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") is a self-contained boot floppy that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction.

Ok well the xp disk that I have was a copied version and wasn't retail. Anyways it doesn't give me the option to format anywhere. Why is it so hard to just clear the computer. Harder to get rid of something then installing it. Also this computer does not have a floppy so that is out of the question. But I can make a boot disk.

You might have to change boot devices in the bios , its so simple really . Go back and look at the guide from bawA, or d/L Ariel's link .
